Job summary

Galliford Try is recruiting a Site Engineer to join the Environment team in Durham. You will provide site engineering and setting-out support across multiple projects within the Northumbrian Water Framework, ensuring high-quality, safe and compliant delivery.

The role involves coordinating setting-out activities, supporting operatives, maintaining records, and contributing to planning and programme delivery.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Experience using setting-out techniques and equipment including Level and EDM.
  • A flexible and proactive approach with strong problem-solving skills.
  • A positive attitude with a desire to learn and take on new challenges.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Understanding of Health & Safety within a construction environment.
  • CSCS and SMSTS (or willingness to work towards – training supported).

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate setting-out/engineering control and coordinate site engineering activities.
  • Support operatives and subcontractors by supplying technical information and construction details.
  • Complete daily diary records with photographs and maintain accurate site data.
  • Manage material reconciliation, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Ensure surveying equipment is calibrated and fit for purpose.
  • Carry out as-built surveys, produce 2D and 3D site sketches and maintain associated records.
  • Assist with planning, monitoring and programming of works.
  • Maintain quality records and ensure all works are delivered in accordance with ITPs.
  • Identify and support the introduction of new techniques, processes and innovations to enhance project delivery.
  • Promote and maintain a positive Health, Safety & Environment culture.
  • Support project teams to ensure works are delivered to programme, budget and specification.

The Role

An opportunity has arisen for a Site Engineer to join our Environment Business. Based in or around Durham, you will have the opportunity to travel across multiple sites and projects within the region.

You will work on our Northumbrian Water Framework, delivering schemes of varying sizes across both Water and Wastewater treatment projects. You will provide site engineering and setting‑out support, ensuring high‑quality, safe and compliant delivery.

What You Will Be Doing

About You

We are looking for someone who has:

Essential
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and data
  • Experience using setting‑out techniques and equipment including Level and EDM (GPS knowledge desirable)
  • A flexible and proactive approach with strong problem‑solving skills
  • A positive attitude with a desire to learn and take on new challenges
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build effective working relationships
  • Understanding of Health & Safety within a construction environment
  • CSCS and SMSTS (or willingness to work towards – training supported)
Desirable
  • Previous experience in the Water or Civil Engineering sector
  • Experience using digital site tools e.g. Field View, Viewpoint
