Job description

About the role

Power Transmission & Distribution | Lower Thames Crossing (RNOT) | Grays, Essex

Balfour Beatty is seeking an experienced Site Engineer to join our Power Transmission & Distribution team, supporting the delivery of a major programme of multi-utility diversion works on the Lower Thames Crossing Roads North of the Thames (RNOT) project.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key role on one of the UK's most significant infrastructure projects, where the successful delivery of utility diversions is critical to unlocking the wider construction programme. Before highways, structures and associated infrastructure can be built, complex existing utility networks must be safely diverted, protected and relocated.

The programme includes major works across electricity, gas, water, wastewater and telecommunications assets, requiring close coordination with utility providers, designers, subcontractors and construction teams. We are therefore looking for a Site Engineer who has previous experience delivering utility, infrastructure or diversion works and understands the technical and operational challenges associated with working around live utility assets.

As Site Engineer, you will be responsible for translating engineering designs into successful site delivery, ensuring works are carried out safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards whilst supporting the management of multiple utility work fronts across the project.

This is a site-based role located at the Lower Thames Crossing compound in Grays, Essex, working five days per week with the opportunity to support utility works across multiple project locations as the programme progresses.

What you'll be doing
  • Supporting the delivery of complex multi-utility diversion works, including electricity, gas, water, wastewater and telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Implementing engineering designs, technical information and construction drawings into site operations.
  • Setting out works in accordance with project requirements and specifications.
  • Managing and coordinating subcontractors undertaking utility diversion activities.
  • Setting teams to work and supervising daily site activities to ensure safe and efficient delivery.
  • Monitoring construction progress, quality and productivity across multiple utility work fronts.
  • Ensuring works are delivered in accordance with utility provider standards, project specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Preparing and reviewing RAMS, identifying risks and implementing appropriate controls.
  • Coordinating with Construction Managers, Project Engineers, designers and utility stakeholders to resolve technical and operational issues.
  • Maintaining accurate site records including daily diaries, progress reports and quality documentation.
  • Supporting programme delivery through planning, resource coordination and progress reporting.
  • Promoting a strong safety culture and ensuring compliance with Balfour Beatty's Zero Harm commitment.
Who we're looking for

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates who have experience working on utility infrastructure, diversion or civil engineering projects.

You will have:

  • Previous experience delivering utility diversion, utility infrastructure or major infrastructure projects involving utility assets.
  • A strong understanding of utility construction activities including electricity, gas, water, wastewater or telecommunications networks.
  • Experience setting out and delivering engineering works on live construction sites.
  • Experience managing subcontractors and coordinating multiple site activities.
  • Strong knowledge of health, safety and environmental requirements within a construction environment.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing RAMS and implementing safe systems of work.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across project teams and utility providers.
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of project delivery, cost control and programme management.
  • HNC, HND or Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline (or equivalent industry experience).
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
