We are looking for a passionate, dynamic, and well‑organised new member of our team who wants to make a difference. You will join our team to provide high levels of compassionate nursing care to babies and their families and join us in our development forwards.

Our Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) is a busy Level 1 unit providing 10 cots in total. It consists of 2 HDU cots and 4 Special Care cots, and a newly established 4‑bed Transitional Care department. We provide gold‑standard care to babies and their families from 32 weeks gestation, but also provide stabilisation for babies born before this gestation, or critically ill term neonates prior to retrieval by the Peninsula Neonatal Transport Team.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, innovative Qualified In Speciality (Q.I.S) nurse to work effectively within our SCBU unit and across the Child Health department. You should possess an RN, RSCN, RN Child, or RM qualification. Completion of the Neonatal Modules is desirable, although a willingness to work towards achieving them would be considered. Experience of working within a neonatal environment is desirable and evidence of leadership and change management in the clinical area would be beneficial. We provide a supportive, friendly environment with the neonate and their family at the centre of everything we do.

Main duties of the job
  • Liaise and communicate effectively with all members of the MDT team, service users, relatives to help co‑ordinate patient care.
  • Excellent organisation skills to effectively help to plan, deliver and evaluate care plans.
  • Be responsive to change and able to work in an environment which has constant interruptions.
  • Act with integrity and professionalism, ensuring that you are demonstrating responsible behaviours at all times, in accordance with our Trust values.
  • Be accountable for your actions and learn from mistakes. Be honest and share experiences, encouraging learning in others.
  • Supporting the wider team during peak activity or during absences.
  • To ensure high standards of care in accordance with agreed policies and procedures.
  • To administer prescribed medication effectively and safely according to Trust requirements and in line with the NMC guidelines.
  • All staff have a responsibility to ensure that the needs of the service are met in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Encourage and welcome feedback to ensure that we as individuals, and as a collective team, learn and continually improve.
  • To be aware of all Trust policies and procedures.
  • There is no direct supervision responsibility within this role however you may be asked to support other members of the team, acting as a role model at all times.
  • Take charge of the co‑ordination of the unit.

  • Knowledge of ICO initiatives within Torbay Trust.
  • Diverse and adaptable communication skills to enable effective communication with the MDT.
