Job summary

Oikos Storage Limited is seeking a committed Shift Operator for its Upper Tier COMAH fuels terminal on Canvey Island, Essex, UK. The role focuses on safe, efficient operation of bulk liquid fuels, within a safety-critical environment on a shift roster.

You will ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures, monitor equipment, and coordinate with colleagues and external drivers to maintain continuous terminal operations.

Responsibilities

• Ensure health, safety and environmental standards are maintained at all times and stop any activity that fails to meet these standards.
• Carry out all operational tasks to ensure terminal operations meet predefined schedules.
• Monitor all operational equipment and report defects immediately.
• Maintain site security standards and report deviations.
• Apply Control of Work system as required by site policy when preparing and isolating plant.
• Follow procedures and challenge if not applicable.
• Take responsibility for site operations during shift and communicate with colleagues, customers, and contractors.
• Ensure smooth handover between shifts to maintain continuity.
• Conduct audits and inspections as required.
• Experience within industrial settings.
• Ability to use computer-based control systems.
• Understand technical drawings such as P&IDs

Job description

Oikos are seeking a committed and safety-conscious Shift Operator to join our Operations Team at our Upper Tier COMAH fuels terminal in Canvey Island, Essex, UK. This is a hands-on role responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the terminal’s systems and equipment involved in the receipt, storage, and distribution of bulk liquid fuels.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong focus on operational discipline and safety, with the ability to work effectively as part of a shift team in a high-hazard environment. You will play a key role in ensuring that terminal activities are carried out in line with operational procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensure health, safety and environmental standards are maintained at all times throughout the site and stop any activity that fails to meet these standards. Report any such deviations from these standards as appropriate
• Carry out all operational tasks to ensure terminal operations meet predefined schedules.
• Monitor all operational equipment and report any defects immediately.
• Maintain site security standards and report any deviations from these standards.
• Ensure “Control of Work” system is applied as required by site policy, specifically in relation to preparing and isolating plant
• Understand where procedures are applicable and ensure they are followed and/or challenge if a procedure is no longer applicable to the operation
• Take responsibility for site operations during shift, communicating directly with colleagues, customers, external logistics colleagues (e.g. ship’s crew, road tanker drivers etc) security and contractors as required
• Ensure a smooth handover takes place to maintain continuity of operations between shifts.
• Conduct Audits and inspections as required.
• Experience within industrial settings.
• Ability to use computer based control systems.
• GCSE or equivalent standard English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning
• Ability to work at height.
• Understanding of safety and environmental legislation applicable for the industry.
• Practical, hands-on approach with strong problem-solving skills.
• Computer literate with experience in using HSEQ systems and Microsoft Office.
• Experience within bulk liquid storage industry.
• Previous experience in oil storage or oil refining industry.
• Ability to understand technical drawings e.g. P&IDs
