Job summary

Tata Steel UK is seeking a Shift Mechanical Craftsperson to join the Llanwern Utilities (Energy) department. You will maintain and service vital utility systems, supporting the Shift Control Engineer across steam, gas, water, compressed air and high‑voltage electrical infrastructure.

You will perform mechanical maintenance across the Energy plant, develop expertise in fluid power and electrical systems, and participate in continuous improvement to ensure safe, reliable operations.

Qualifications

• Completed an approved mechanical apprenticeship with NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent).
• Proven experience in a relevant mechanical maintenance role.
• Understanding of fluid power and basic electrical principles.
• High voltage switching or maintenance experience (training provided).
• Experience contributing to continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Carrying out mechanical maintenance, repairs, and fault-finding across Energy and Manufacturing operations.
• Ensuring all work complies with Health & Safety requirements, engineering standards, and permit-to-work procedures.
• Developing a strong understanding of fluid power and electrical systems, eventually becoming authorised to issue permits.
• Responding to engineering, safety, and quality issues, taking corrective action or escalating where required.
• Participating fully in team activities, using your skills flexibly to meet business objectives.
• Working closely with, and where required supervising, additional resources to support maintenance activities.
• Actively contributing to improvements in plant performance through continuous improvement principles.
• Supporting the Shift Control Engineer in delivering a reliable and efficient service to internal customers.
