Overview
Ensure precision-machined and fabricated components meet customer specifications and quality standards through timely in-process, first-off, and final inspection on the day shift (06:00-16:00, Monday to Thursday).
Responsibilities
- Perform first-off, in-process, and final inspection of machined/manufactured components.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings including tolerances, GD&T, surface finish, and material specifications.
- Use a full range of metrology tools such as micrometers, verniers, bore gauges, height gauges, and surface plates.
- Record inspection results in reports and ERP/MRP systems, maintaining full traceability at all stages.
- Raise NCRs and support containment and corrective actions; liaise closely with Production and Quality teams to resolve issues promptly.
- Conduct line checks and patrol inspections during production to prevent defects and reduce scrap.
- Support FAIR/PPAP and customer quality documentation as required.
- Calibrate and maintain gauges, reporting and tagging any out-of-tolerance equipment.
- Contribute to 5S, continuous improvement, and safe working practices (H&S).
- Provide clear handovers to subsequent shifts and communicate effectively with the Quality team.
Desirable (Advantageous)
- Experience using FARO Arm portable CMM and basic PolyWorks reporting.
- Familiarity with CMM operation (any brand) and/or blue-light or laser scanning.
- Background in precision machining, fabrication, or heavy engineering environments.
About You
- A time-served manual machinist or inspector looking to develop further in a detailed inspection role.
- Strong understanding of measurement techniques, machining processes, and shop-floor workflows.
- Committed to working to ISO 9001 (or similar) with excellent attention to detail and a right-first-time mindset.
- A confident communicator able to challenge, collaborate, and help close the loop on quality issues.
- Computer-literate (MS Office/ERP/MRP) with accurate and tidy documentation habits.
Qualifications and Experience
- Previous experience in a machine shop or precision engineering environment.
- Formal apprenticeship or NVQ/City & Guilds in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (preferred).
- Evidence of metrology training or CMM exposure (beneficial).
