Job summary

The Shetland Islands Council is seeking a Ferry Engineer to join our marine engineering team across various locations in Shetland. You will be responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of main propulsion and auxiliary machinery aboard our vessels, ensuring readiness and compliance with procedures.

Working in a Permanent Full Time role across shift patterns, you will report to the Master and be prepared to travel throughout Shetland at short notice.

Qualifications

  • Experience with marine propulsion and auxiliary machinery preferred.
  • Knowledge of maintenance regimes and safety procedures.
  • Ability to follow Master’s instructions and work as part of a crew.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the safe, efficient and cost effective operation of main propulsion and auxiliary machinery.
  • Keeping the Master informed as to condition, maintenance and readiness of machinery, electrical and propulsion equipment.
  • Ensuring that equipment and systems are maintained in good working order.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and safety of machinery spaces and shore side facilities.
  • Regular testing of machinery systems and recording tests on form CHK2a.
  • Operate engine systems on Master’s orders during automation/instrument failures until safe for passengers.
