Job summary

Vale operates the Clydach Refinery and is seeking an experienced Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) Manager to join the Leadership Team. The role provides strategic direction for safety, health, environment and security, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and the major hazard risk framework.

The successful candidate will be a senior SHE professional, capable of managing complex risk systems and driving performance across the refinery.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years’ experience managing teams and delivering performance.
  • Experience operating at a strategic level as part of a senior leadership team.
  • Degree qualified in a science, engineering, environmental or related discipline.
  • NEBOSH Diploma, or equivalent higher-level SHE qualification.
  • ISEP membership or equivalent environmental qualification.
  • Experience operating within a COMAH-regulated or major hazard environment.
  • Strong understanding of process safety management and major hazard risk management principles.
  • Experience engaging with regulatory authorities and external stakeholders.
  • Experience leading change and applying sound change management principles in an operational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own and lead the SHE management system ensuring alignment to ISO45001 and ISO14001.
  • Provide strategic leadership for Safety, Health, Environment and Security as part of Refinery Leadership Team.
  • Develop and deliver the refinery's SHE strategy aligned with objectives and regulatory standards.
  • Own management systems to satisfy COMAH duties and deliver the Safety Case Report on schedule.
  • Act as site lead authority on SHE matters, advising senior leaders and operational teams.
  • Build relationships with regulators, emergency services and external stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement in SHE performance, culture, governance and compliance.
  • Support operational improvements, capital projects and organisational change with SHE integration.
  • Lead and develop a high performing SHE and Security team with succession planning.
  • Provide leadership for emergency preparedness and crisis management across the site.

Job description

Vale Base Metals is seeking an experienced Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) Manager to join the Clydach Refinery Leadership Team.

Reporting directly to the UK Head of Operations, the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership across safety, health, environment, process safety and security, ensuring the refinery continues to operate safely, sustainably and in compliance with all regulatory requirements. As a member of the Refinery Leadership Team, the role plays a key part in managing major hazard risks, influencing strategic decision-making and supporting the long-term success of the refinery. This is a senior leadership position requiring an experienced SHE professional capable of managing complex risk management systems and driving organisational and team performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Owner of the S.H.E management System that supports effective prevention and mitigation of all risks and assure alignment to ISO45001 and ISO14001.
  • Provide strategic leadership for Safety, Health, Environment and Security as a member of the Refinery Leadership Team.
  • Develop and deliver the refinery's SHE strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives, regulatory requirements and corporate standards.
  • Owner of all management systems that support the refinery satisfying it is COMAH duties and ensures that the required Safety Case Report is delivered as per schedule.
  • Act as the site's lead authority on SHE matters, providing expert advice to senior leaders and operational teams.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with regulators, emergency services, and external stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement in SHE performance, culture, governance, and compliance across the refinery.
  • Support operational improvements, capital projects, and organisational change through the integration of SHE principles and risk management.
  • Lead and develop a high performing SHE and Security team, ensuring strong capability, engagement, and succession planning.
  • Provide leadership for emergency preparedness, resilience planning, and crisis management activities across the site.
Requirements

The role will suit an experienced SHE leader from a major hazard industry such as chemicals, metals, mining/extraction, energy, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, or another COMAH-regulated environment.

  • Minimum of five years’ experience managing teams and delivering performance through development, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Experience operating at a strategic level, ideally as part of a senior leadership team.
  • Degree qualified in a science, engineering, environmental or related discipline.
  • NEBOSH Diploma, or equivalent higher-level SHE qualification, as a minimum.
  • Relevant environmental qualification, such as ISEP membership or equivalent environmental management qualification as a minimum.
  • Demonstrable experience operating within a COMAH-regulated or major hazard environment.
  • Strong understanding of process safety management and major hazard risk management principles.
  • Experience engaging with regulatory authorities and external stakeholders.
  • Experience leading change and applying sound change management principles in an operational environment.
