Job summary

A local automotive service provider in Cheltenham is seeking a Service Technician/Mechanic apprentice. This role offers extensive training to develop practical skills in diagnosing and repairing vehicles. Apprentices will gain essential qualifications and certifications while working alongside experienced technicians. Successful candidates will demonstrate enthusiasm to learn and a strong interest in vehicle engineering. The apprenticeship lasts 3 years, with a starting wage of £15,704 and potential for wage increases with experience. Applications close on 2nd January 2026.

Job description

Every day is different within the Service department. As a Service Technician/Mechanic apprentice, your duties include:

  • Use diagnostic equipment to identify vehicle faults
  • Test parts and systems to ensure correct working
  • Follow checklists to ensure all critical parts of vehicles are examined
  • Carry out bumper‑to‑bumper overview, service, and inspection
  • Maintain electronic systems, including on‑board entertainment systems
  • Repair and maintain vehicle parts such as clutches, gearboxes, tyres, brakes and suspension
  • Complete legible and accurate paperwork for customers and centre records
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work environment
  • Work with a wide range of products, from traditional to hybrid and electronic engines
  • Segregate waste for disposal or recycling and comply with environmental legislation
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others, minimising risk of injury and damage
  • Carry out removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical sequence, and advanced problem‑solving techniques to establish faults
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions
  • Follow repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs, including complex ones requiring in‑depth knowledge
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures
  • Use ICT to create emails, word‑process documents and conduct web‑based searches
  • Inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer
Training Schedule

The training will be delivered using a combination of virtual classroom remote learning and face‑to‑face block release weeks at our state‑of‑the‑art training centre. Successful applicants must be prepared to travel to the Volkswagen Group National Learning Centre in Milton Keynes to complete their apprenticeship training. All training costs are covered as part of the programme (travel, accommodation and food). In the workplace, your personal mentor will support your continued learning.

This is a fully rounded training experience where you will build life skills that last and gain both apprenticeship qualifications and brand certifications. As an apprentice, you will also have the opportunity to attend Outward Bound, a personal development week which supports developing resilience, confidence and teamwork skills. On successful completion of the three‑year programme you will receive:

  • Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard in Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle)
  • Certificate in Automotive Refrigerant Handling
  • Brand‑specific certifications
  • English and Maths guidance from the government (changed on 11th February 2025)
  • Up‑skilling support in English and Maths (exception by employer)

Wage: £15,704 for your first year, potentially increasing with experience. Hours: Monday – Friday, 08:30 – 17:30. Saturday work or shifts possible. Working week confirmed on application. Duration: 3 years. Start date: Sunday 15 February 2026.
