Responsibilities
- Assist senior technicians in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing various mechanical and electrical systems
- Learn to perform routine maintenance tasks, including inspections, lubrication, and adjustments
- Participate in equipment installations and upgrades under supervision
- Develop proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment to identify issues accurately
- Collaborate with team members to ensure timely completion of service requests and projects
- Follow safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment
- Document service activities, including work performed, parts used, and customer interactions
- Attend training sessions and workshops to enhance technical skills and product knowledge
- Communicate effectively with customers to address inquiries, explain service procedures, and provide recommendations
- Assist with inventory management, including tracking parts and supplies used during service operations; contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop, segregate waste for disposal or recycling, and comply with industry environmental legislation
- Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage
- Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle
- Obtain diagnostic and repair information
- Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability
- Use a range of diagnostic equipment
- Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem‑solving techniques to establish faults
- Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions
- Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those that involve complex procedures or in‑depth knowledge
- Test the function of repaired and fitted components
- Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures
- Use ICT to create emails, word‑process documents, and carry out web‑based searches
- Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer
Training Schedule
Training schedule Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (light vehicle) Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:
- The programme lasts at least 36 months (3 years) and you’ll achieve a nationally recognised qualification
- All apprentices are employed through the dealer network and attend week‑long block training at our state‑of‑the‑art training centre in Coventry
- Block training is complemented by a combination of regular coaching visits from experienced coaches as well as virtual classroom sessions and e‑learning modules
- Your development is supported throughout the apprenticeship journey, focused on achieving qualification recognised across the motor industry, providing a foundation for career development within our expanding dealer network
- Before the standard is met, all apprentices must hold a certificate that meets the EU’s 2014 F‑gas regulation
