The Catering Department, Victoria Hospital, Blackpool are looking for a Patient Meals Service Supervisor. If you can raise to the challenges of providing a high quality service to over 800 patients per meal service and are a dynamic person please read on. You will supervise the day-to-day operational requirements for the patients meal service conveyor belt system and be responsible for maintaining the high standard of food service to patients. This is a working supervisor role that covers early and late shifts, you will work with two supervisors on a 3 week rota including weekends and Bank holidays as rostered. Duties include allocating work to catering staff, supervising, directing and involvement in serving meals for patients in accordance to the Catering Departments standards following policies and procedures. You need to have a 'can do' attitude and be flexible to ensure the needs of the service are met every day. Duties include: Planning, organising and supervising the meals service to patients. Working on the patient meals conveyor belt carrying out visual checks on each patient meal paying particular attention to; presentation, portion control and meeting patients' medical and cultural needs, for example, gluten free, milk free, blended food, halal and kosher. Supervise and work with the meal service team on the strip-down, dishwasher belt, cleaning crockery, equipment, meal trolleys and service area ready for the next meal service. Complete staff weekly rotas, allocate daily duties and carry out staff appraisals and be part of the recruitment process. Be involved in service improvement meetings to ensure the provision of a cost effective, quality catering service is provided for patients. The Patients' Meals Service Section of the Catering Department employs 25 staff in the service of approx. 2400 meals each day for patients. A 'trayed meal system' offers a choice menu for all meals and provides for 850-900 patient's delivering Breakfast, Lunch & Supper to all wards. The Patients' Meals Service Supervisor has first line supervisory responsibility for the patients meals service section. The Patients' Meals Service Supervisor fulfils a very important role in providing a catering service that contributes to more patients being treated and being given higher quality care. As applicable to all NHS staff under the 'Agenda for Change', the Patients' Meals Service Supervisor must be committed to applying a partnership approach to "Assist new ways of working which best deliver the range and quality of service required, in as efficient and effective a way as possible, and organised to best meet the needs of patients". An operational supervisor is responsible for the patients' meals services in support of the Catering Management team. Being involved in co-operating all aspects of operations to ensure the provision of a cost effective, quality catering service for Patients. In addition to organisation, supervision and operational controls in the Patients' Meals Service Section the Supervisor contributes to good communication and inter‑department relationships within the hospital, Undertaking planning, organisation and supervision of Meal Service for Patients, within the Hospital and develop the services by making the most efficient and economic use of its resources. Ensuring correct and appropriate use of Food commodities, Cleaning Materials, Disposable items, Light Equipment and any other items required to deliver the catering services. Allocating work, supervising, directing and involvement in serving of meals for Patients in accordance with the Catering Department's Hygiene & Quality Standards, and Recipes. Checking meals served to confirm that items ordered, food quality, presentation and temperature meets with required standards. Some involvement in audits of the set standards for Patients meal services, with other personnel as appropriate e.g. Ward Sister, Matron, and implementing improvements as necessary. Comply with the requirements of 'The Food Safety Act 1990', ensuring that all measures are taken to deliver a food safe and hygienic catering service. Application of an effective system of HACCP, 'Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points' throughout commodity receipt, storage and service of food to ensure associated documentation is correctly completed in own area of responsibility and also by patients' meals service staff. Controlling quantities of meals and provisions issued to wards with particular attention and taking action as required to ensure correct portioning and food issues to avoid wastage Monitoring of meals returned (wastage) from wards and taking such action as required to contact ward and identify reason for wastage with a view to minimising this and avoid further over‑ordering. Planning and ensuring staffing level arrangements, duty rotas and associated departmental staffing meets with all aspects of the operational needs of the Catering Department. Managing staff annual leave and sickness absence. Undertaking a degree of involvement in the Staff Appraisal procedure. Leading by example and ensuring staff are correctly / cleanly dressed when on duty and in compliance with rules regarding jewellery, watches, hair control etc. Strictly complying with codes of practice for general and personal hygiene. Knowing and applying the correct procedures in catering staff responsibilities to report any sickness and especially that compliance with the D & V policy is ensured. Ensuring correct use and cleaning of any equipment, or item of plant or machinery, to a high standard of hygiene. Awareness and compliance with Food Safety systems for Raw & Cooked separation E.g. use of colour coding for knives, cutting boards etc., to avoid cross contamination risks. Being aware of, following and ensuring catering staffs' compliance with the Health and Safety procedures of the Catering Department and of the Trust. Meeting personal responsibility, for one's own safety and safety of colleagues, through safe working practices. Informing colleagues and customers of any identified potential risk E.g. Defective equipment, Spillage etc. by placement of warning notices and ensuring appropriate reporting as required through the Estates online reporting system for repair or correction. Taking appropriate action in the event of an accident to notify, refer and complete online Incident Reports in line with Health & Safety policy. Personal Be physically capable to be meet the physical demands of the job role. Able to work in a hot, noisy environment.
