Job summary

Sandwell College is seeking a Service Assistant to join the Central Catering team on a fixed-term, part-time basis. You will work 30 hours a week across term-time (37 weeks) and report to the Chef Manager, supporting daily catering operations and delivering a welcoming, safe dining experience for students, staff and visitors.

Your role includes assisting with food preparation, setting up dining and service areas, handling till duties, and maintaining high standards of cleanliness and food

Qualifications

• Excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Experience in catering/hospitality is desirable.
• Knowledge of food hygiene and health and safety practices.
• Ability to work efficiently in a busy environment and manage multiple tasks.
• Basic numeracy and confidence using a cash till.

Responsibilities

• Assist with preparation of food and refreshments across catering outlets.

• Operate cash tills and undertake cashier duties.

Description

We are looking to recruit a reliable and enthusiastic Service Assistant to join our Catering Team at Sandwell College on a part time (30 hours a week Monday – Friday), 37 weeks term-time only, fixed term basis. Reporting to the Chef Manager, you will play an important role in supporting the day-to-day operation of our catering service, helping to provide a welcoming, safe, and high-quality dining experience for students, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with the preparation of food and refreshments, including salad items, baked products, and hot food service preparation for any of our catering outlets anything required from the Chef Manager
• Prepare and set up dining and service areas where needed, ensuring they are clean, organised, and ready for service including any restocking of goods
• Operate cash tills and undertake cashier duties in line with college procedures
• Clean down of catering areas to a high standard
• Assist with washing-up and daily cleaning duties to maintain a safe and hygienic environment
• Follow SFBB regards food temperatures recordings cleaning rotas are all completed
• Assist with college hospitality functions, open events, and other special events
• Follow food hygiene, food safety, and health and safety procedures always

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• Excellent customer service and communication skills
• Experience working in a catering, hospitality or food service environment is desirable
• Knowledge of food hygiene and health and safety practices
• The ability to work efficiently in a busy environment and manage a variety of tasks
• Basic numeracy skills and confidence using a cash till
