Job summary

Lancashire Outdoor Education Service, based at Tower Wood near Lake Windermere, is seeking a Senior Outdoor Activity Tutor to deliver high-quality outdoor sessions and support the day-to-day running of the centre.

Join a team delivering canoeing, climbing, caving and other activities, while mentoring others and helping maintain safety and service standards across multiple centres.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three of the listed outdoor qualifications (or equivalent).
  • Experience working in outdoor centres or outdoor activity delivery settings.
  • Experience working with schools, youth groups and adults.
  • Ability to work independently and take delegated responsibility.
  • High-quality course planning and delivery experience.
  • Desirable senior outdoor activity qualifications such as MiDAS or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Support day-to-day centre operations and deputise for Operational Managers.
  • Contribute to planning and development of programmes, staffing and resources.
  • Promote a positive centre culture and support colleagues across departments.

Senior Outdoor Activity Tutor

Lancashire Outdoor Education Service | Based at Tower Wood, Lake Windermere

We're looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Outdoor Activity Tutor to join Lancashire Outdoor Education Service and help shape exceptional outdoor learning experiences across our centres. Operating from Tower Wood, our service provides high-quality outdoor adventure and residential experiences for schools, youth groups, adults and community organisations. From Canoeing and Climbing to Caving and Ghyll scrambling, we help people learn about themselves, others and the environment through outdoor learning. As a Senior Outdoor Activity Tutor, you will combine activity delivery with operational responsibilities, supporting the day-to-day management of our centres while helping to maintain the highest standards of safety, customer experience and outdoor education.

You will:

  • Deliver safe, engaging and high-quality outdoor activity sessions.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for someone with significant experience in outdoor education who can confidently lead activities, work independently and support wider centre operations. You'll have a passion for delivering outstanding experiences and mentoring others within a collaborative team environment.

Leadership & Operational Skills

You'll be comfortable taking responsibility, making decisions and supporting centre operations within the Lancashire outdoor education framework. Strong organisational skills, initiative and the ability to maintain high operational standards are essential.

Communication & Customer Focus

You'll be a confident communicator who can engage with a wide variety of groups, colleagues and partners. A professional, customer-focused approach and commitment to delivering high-quality experiences is key.

Safety & Compliance

You will demonstrate excellent safety awareness and risk management skills, ensuring activities and centre operations are delivered to the highest standards.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

Applicants should hold:

  • A minimum of three of the following qualifications (or equivalent):
  • Mountain Leader (Summer)
  • RCI
  • British canoeing coach award/Paddlesport leader/Paddlesport touring leader
  • Level 1 Cave Leader
  • RYA Dinghy Instructor
  • Experience working within outdoor centres or outdoor activity delivery settings.
  • Experience working with a wide range of client groups including schools, youth groups and adults.
  • Experience working independently and taking delegated responsibility.
  • High-quality course planning and delivery experience.
Desirable
  • D1 (E) licence with MiDAS.
  • Current First Aid qualification.
  • Senior awards such as MIA, RYA Senior Instructor or Paddle UK advanced coaching or leadership awards.
  • Additional outdoor activity qualifications.
  • Relevant higher education qualification.
