Job summary

WSP in Southampton is seeking a Senior Transport Planner to join our Transport Planning Team. You will mentor and provide technical guidance across public and private sector projects, delivering a broad range of transport planning outputs and assisting with DCOs and environmental studies.

You will contribute to development planning, business cases, freight, sustainable transport schemes, and EV charging procurements while managing client relationships and leading project delivery across the UK.

Qualifications

• Experience delivering transport planning outputs for private and public sectors.
• Up-to-date knowledge of UK transport policies, legislations and planning processes.
• Strong numerical and analytical skills with MS Excel and transport data analysis.
• Ability to produce technical and non-technical public reports and presentations.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with clients and stakeholders.
• Project management experience including fee proposals and delivering projects.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day delivery of a range of transport planning projects.
• Lead development of feasibility studies and options appraisals.
• Prepare Transport Statements, Assessments, Travel Plans, EIAs, Parking and Access studies.
• Lead Development Consent Order applications for NSIPs.
• Manage client relationships and collaborate with internal and external teams.
• Take on project management duties including budgets and schedules.
• Engage with stakeholders and lead design team liaison.

A little more about your role...

Due to our expanding public and private sector workload, we are seeking a Senior Transport Planner to join our Transport Planning Team in Southampton. Working as part of an integrated team of planners, engineers and modellers, and collaborating with various disciplines across our UK offices, you will contribute to the successful delivery of our wide portfolio of projects by providing mentoring and technical advice to our team members and a range of public and private sector clients.

As a senior member of our team you will work across a broad range of technical specialisms including development planning, Development Consent Orders (DCO’s), business case support, freight, sustainable transport schemes (bus/active travel) and Electric Vehicle Charging procurements. The projects that you will take a lead on span across the UK, with a focus on projects for our South Coast clients. Our clients range from National, Regional and Local Government organisations, to developers, energy generators and utilities providers. Currently the Transport Planning Team in Southampton are involved with delivering the UK's first fusion energy plant project, known as STEP, a government funded project to shift to cleaner energy technologies.

Your role will be a varied one, with no two days being the same, but key responsibilities will include:

• Providing day-to-day support in the delivery of a range of projects, which at any one time could include:
• Concept studies/strategies, business case development for sustainable transport schemes, development of feasibility studies/options appraisal reporting;
• Transport Statements, Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, Environmental Impact Assessments, Parking Studies, Access Studies, and Movement and Access Studies, leading to planning applications, post-permission, and discharge of planning condition works.
• Development Consent Order applications for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, primarily related to energy projects.
• Actively managing and leading efforts to build and maintain collaborative, cooperative, and harmonious working relationships with both clients and colleagues.
• Taking on Project Management roles, ensuring your projects are delivered to budget, programme, technical standards and associated legal requirements.
• Involvement in high profile client engagement, stakeholder management, design team liaison (both internal and with other external multidisciplinary professionals) and project management

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate...

• Experience in contributing to and preparing relevant Transport Planning outputs (examples outlined above) for clients across private and public sectors.
• Up to date knowledge on latest transport policies and legislations, design standards and planning processes applicable to the UK.
• Strong numerical and analytical skills and excellent working knowledge of MS Office tools, excel spreadsheets, transport data analysis and presentation and transportation software including TRICS and junction capacity assessment programmes.
• Ability to produce technical project and non-technical public reports and presentations for a range of clients and stakeholders to a high technical standard;
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate confidently with clients, stakeholders, team members and present at meetings, workshops and public forums;
• Project management experience, with the ability to review client briefs and tenders, develop and contribute to fee proposals and lead project delivery including supervising workloads, task delegation, supporting junior staff and managing client expectations;
• Have a sound commercial awareness including effective financial management.
