Job summary

Working as a Senior Theatre Practitioner you will be required to function effectively as a leader of the peri-operative team to ensure the provision of an efficient and high-quality surgical service.

You will have a strong knowledge and experience in operating theatres with an excellent understanding of the perioperative needs of patients, and a wide knowledge of peri-operative nursing practices and procedures. You must be organised, have excellent interpersonal and communication skills with experience of supervising a multi-disciplinary team providing the highest standard of patient care across a varied caseload.

Ensure a welcoming, caring and safe environment, as well as promoting, maintaining and monitoring standards in accordance with the guidelines of the NMC/HCPC and CQC.

Evidence of leading teams, engagement in recruitment and retention activities and supervising students / supporting programmes of learning would be an advantage.

We offer our scrub practitioners the opportunity to gain qualification through specialism in Anaesthesia through a post graduate certificate programme developed in collaboration with University College London Perioperative Medicine Faculty.

Main duties of the job

• As a senior theatre practitioner, you will be responsible for helping and offering support for patients undergoing surgery. You will lead and support the theatre team to prepare a wide range of specialist equipment and other medical devices required during surgery.
• You will also be responsible for planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without direct supervision, and expected to supervise qualified and unqualified staff.
• In the absence of the Lead Practitioner you will have continuing responsibility for the management of the Theatre and Anaesthesia department, including the deployment of staff and the use of equipment and resources.
• You will supervise and support members of the theatre team ensuring that all staff are able to provide the highest standard of care.
• In addition you must have: Operating Department Practitioner registered with the Health Professions Council (HCPC) OR a NMC registered Nurse (with appropriate and accredited post-graduate anaesthetic module/course); Eligibility to work in the UK; Extensive knowledge of patient care / needs in the theatre environment; Extensive experience in anaesthetics; Evidence of leading a team within a clinical environment; Proven experience of managing change within a clinical setting; A recognised mentor qualification and experience of supporting learners would be advantageous.

• Teaching & Assessment Level 3, ENB 998/C&G 7307, Cert. ed., other relevant qualification or equivalent experience (FO)**
• Recognised Post Registration course in Anaesthetic/ Theatre/ Recovery/ other relevant accredited course or 4 years relevant clinical experience within a theatre or Day Surgery environment

Job responsibilities

• To work according to the Nursing & Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a named nurse (or key worker) for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for: Protecting and supporting the health of individual patients and clients
• Development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care including discharge planning for each patient
• Protecting and supporting the health of individual patients and clients acting as their advocate, when necessary, within the multi-disciplinary team.
• To take charge of the department/ theatre in the absence of Lead Theatre Practitioner following performance review against the agreed KSF outline and progression through the first gateway
• To provide support to the Band 7 Lead Theatre Practitioners in managing specific specialist theatres and to supervise and teach staff and learners whilst ensuring the delivery of safe and high-quality care
• To participate in clinical supervision programmes as appropriate and teach and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor to junior nurses and others.
• To deliver care to patients during the perioperative period. Including anaesthetic, intraoperative (scrub & circulating) and post - operative recovery.
• The assessment of care and health education needs.
• The development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care including discharge planning for each patient.
• To develop leadership skills and experience in the management of the department and provide high level of specialist clinical leadership.
• To promote and participate in the implementation of the UCLH Nursing & Midwifery strategy and work towards achieving the Trust Top 10
• Reviewing nursing practice and implementing appropriate changes based on research/best practice.
• Developing and implementing Audit, Quality and Risk Management initiatives.
