Job summary

Octopus Energy is expanding its TechOps Generalist team in the UK. The role is a multi‑discipline enterprise IT position, spanning collaboration with security, automation, and SaaS tooling. You’ll handle day‑to‑day tech support and lead projects across networks, devices and identities.

We seek 5–7 years of solid experience, familiarity with Okta, Kandji, Kolide, Zscaler, Meraki, HiBob, OAuth/OIDC/SAML, and SCIM provisioning. Roles can be fully office‑based or hybrid, offering autonomy and growth.

We are very excited to be growing our small and efficient TechOps team at Octopus. We aren't looking for standard IT support — we are looking for an ambitious, deeply knowledgeable and experienced TechOps Generalist to join our team, to grow with the rest of the company, and ensure we are doing so in a secure and safe way.

You will be a key partner in defining what TechOps is at Octopus. We will be continuing to shape this team to provide world class support to our employees, building our way out of problems with engineering firepower and undertaking transformational organisational change. We don't just “fix” things — we automate them out of existence.

For us, a Generalist isn’t about knowing a little of everything; it’s a multi‑disciplinary role for someone who’s deeply experienced in many facets of Enterprise IT. Think multi‑domain specialist — not Jack of all trades.

What is TechOps?

A more modern, more lean version of a traditional Enterprise IT team with around one of us for every 1000 people at Octopus. We cover everything from what most people would call “1st line support” all the way up to high‑level strategic planning, and everything in between.

We tackle big problems and the breadth of work is huge. Dealing with ambiguity is a key part of working in TechOps, and every day will be a new and exciting one, working on varying challenges across the company and keeping plates spinning.

Roles you might be in

What you'll do

• Provide delightful day‑to‑day technical support to all areas of the business, to ensure our incredible employees are able to do their job as efficiently as possible. Their problems are our problems.
• Troubleshoot and fix a wide range of technical issues, from laptop faults and network issues, to account provisioning failures and SSO problems.
• Collaborate closely with our Security team to ensure we strike the right balance between security, productivity and user experience.
• Continually find opportunities to automate our processes and improve the user experience.
• Empower our people to help themselves by designing and building self‑service solutions.
• Monitor and maintain all the tech in our offices around the world – networks, meeting rooms, printers, digital signage, CCTV, door access control.
• Manage supplier relationships and the procurement process for SaaS and hardware.
• Lead and manage complex technical projects with multiple stakeholders from around the business.

Examples of some TechOps projects

• Rollout of, and migration to, a new identity provider.
• macOS and Windows MDM migration.
• Rollout of a new device trust and posture compliance solution.
• The replacement of insecure factors like SMS with phishing‑resistant factors.
• Office fit‑outs, including tech like network, AV, access control, etc.
• SaaS migrations for acquisitions e.g. Microsoft 365 to Google Workspace.

What you'll need

We’re looking for people with at least 5‑7 years of solid enterprise IT experience.

The technical bar is high. While we use Okta, Kandji, Kolide, Zscaler, Meraki and HiBob amongst others, we care about your understanding of the fundamentals of key SaaS tooling, but we also expect candidates to have significant experience implementing and customising these tools for Enterprise environments, so if you’ve lived in Entra and Intune? Awesome!

• Confidence in articulating and implementing your technical ability, particularly with enterprise‑level SaaS tooling, customer support and automation. The ability to do this both with your peers and novice users is vital.
• A team player – we don’t want people who vanish and come back with perfect, completed work. You collaborate and work transparently and can identify who can help you, or needs your help.
• Rich experience and examples of scripting, using APIs to automating mundane and error‑prone repetitive tasks.
• Comfortable with a huge amount of ambiguity and spinning a lot of plates all at the same time.
• Experience working with multiple teams and managing multiple stakeholders.
• Experience managing and deploying macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android at scale.
• Experience administering and troubleshooting Single Sign‑On (SSO) technologies such as OAuth, OIDC and SAML.
• Deep experience with Identity & Access Management. You should be able to explain the nuances of SAML, OIDC, and OAuth, and have hands‑on experience with SCIM provisioning.
• Experience designing and installing office networks – we use Cisco Meraki.
• A conscientious approach to everything you do and a passion for doing the right thing rather than the easy thing.

This role can be either fully office based in any of our major offices in Brighton, Manchester, Leicester, Coventry or London, or a hybrid of a few days a week working remotely and office based.

Our salary bandings are between £65,000 – £90,000 depending on your experience. On a call with one of our talent team, it's something we always chat through, as we genuinely want to match your experience with the right salary.
