Job summary

Cardiff Metropolitan University is seeking a Senior Technician to deliver specialist technical expertise and hands-on support in biochemistry and food chemistry laboratories. You will enable safe, effective and innovative practical work using specialist equipment and software, working within a collaborative technical support team.

You will lead by supporting practical classes, planning and organizing resources, and providing ongoing assistance and training to staff and students.

Qualifications

• HND or degree in an appropriate discipline is required.
• Practical laboratory experience is desirable.
• Proficiency with computers for word processing, graphs and spreadsheets is expected.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical support for biochemistry and food chemistry practical classes, including preparation of solutions and materials.
• Liaise with academic leads on practical class scheduling, validate methods and carry out preparatory tests.
• Introduce, explain and provide ongoing training on lab equipment to staff, students and visitors.
• Contribute to routine monthly checks of equipment in teaching laboratories.

Job description

To support the delivery of high-quality, practice-based learning, research and innovation, we’re looking for a Senior Technician to provide specialist technical expertise and hands-on support in the disciplines of biochemistry and food chemistry. As part of a technical support team, you’ll contribute to enabling students and staff to carry out safe, effective, and innovative practical work using specialist equipment and software in the school’s learning and teaching laboratories.

You’ll lead the way by:

• Provide technical support for biochemistry and food chemistry themed practical classes, including the preparation of solutions and materials.
• Liaise with academic leads on the practical class scheduling and content and support validation and preparatory tests on methods as and when required.
• To introduce, explain and provide on-going advice and support training in the use of laboratory equipment to members of staff, students and visitors.
• To contribute to the routine statutory monthly checks of equipment in the teaching laboratories.

What you’ll bring

With a working knowledge of relevant laboratory health and safety requirements, an understanding in the operation and maintenance of general laboratory equipment, ability to plan, prioritise and organise experimental protocols and resources, you’ll work as part of a team showing a flexible approach to delivering team results.

Additionally, you’ll bring:

• An HND or degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate discipline.
• Recognised and relevant practical laboratory experience.
• Proficient in the use of computers including word processing, scientific graphs and spreadsheets.
• Excellent record keeping skills, including the ability to maintain accurate laboratory notes and inventories.
• A clear commitment and interest in technical work and a desire to share knowledge and motivate students.
