Job summary

Leicestershire County Council is seeking an experienced leader to head the Autism Outreach Team within the Specialist Teaching Service. You will drive inclusion, support schools, and work with families and agencies to improve outcomes for autistic pupils across Key Stages 1–5.

Role includes leading on specific areas, managing performance, deputising for the Team Manager, and delivering training while advancing safeguarding and quality assurance across the network.

About the Role

The Autism Outreach Team is a well-regarded and welcoming team, consisting of specialist teachers and practitioners with a wealth of knowledge and experience, and a passion for inclusion. We work with mainstream education settings across Leicestershire to support positive outcomes for autistic pupils in Key Stages 1–5.

We are committed to understanding autism as difference rather than deficit and, as part of the Specialist Teaching Service, we aim to improve opportunities, outcomes and experiences for children and young people with SEND in partnership with families, educational settings and organisations.

We welcome applications from experienced specialist teachers who wish to take on a leadership role and contribute to the development of the team. This will include leading on specific areas of work, providing effective performance management within the team, and deputising for the Team Manager as appropriate.

LCC’s Autism Outreach Team is the East Midlands’ Neuro Inclusive Education Network’s regional partner and, as such, developing, quality assurance and delivering training to a range of audiences is a key part of the role.

You will have a caseload responsibility, which will focus on enabling schools to implement a range of teaching and learning strategies to support the progress and inclusion of pupils with a diagnosis of autism or communication and interaction needs. You will be confident in providing support and advice to children and young people with a diagnosis of autism or communication and interaction needs, their families/carers and educational settings within a multi-agency context.

About You

To apply for this post, you must be able to evidence in your application how you meet the following criteria:

• Degree-level qualification and Qualified Teacher Status, with evidence of further training and professional development in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
• Substantial experience of working directly with pupils with a diagnosis of autism or communication and interaction needs, including strong knowledge of effective teaching and learning approaches, assessments, strategies and resources to support the attainment and inclusion of autistic pupils and pupils with SEND.
• Experience of working in partnership with schools, families, other support services and agencies to improve outcomes for pupils, and confidence in contributing effectively within a multi-agency context.
• Experience of delivering training, including in-service training for teachers, and the ability to communicate specialist knowledge clearly and effectively to a range of audiences.
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including the ability to work effectively as part of a team, delegate appropriately, solve problems, and resolve conflict sensitively and decisively.
• Significant experience of working in accordance with relevant statutory and local SEND policies and procedures, with the ability to carry out all duties in line with LCC safeguarding policies and procedures and fulfil relevant safeguarding competencies, while actively demonstrating the values of the authority: Positivity, Trust and Respect, Flexibility, Openness and Transparency.
• Ability to perform all duties and tasks with reasonable adjustment where appropriate, including working flexibly around holiday periods in line with service requirements and having access to a vehicle with the ability to travel to temporary bases such as schools and touch-down bases.
