Position: Senior Tax Manager - Direct Tax
Location: Remote Position

Job overview

The individual in this role requires a professionally curious mindset, an affinity for creative problem‑solving and continuous process improvement. The employee should bring income tax accounting, compliance, and reporting expertise. Reporting to the Director of Tax, you will also provide development and training to the Canadian tax team members and serve as subject matter expert supporting other functions, such as finance or operations teams. In addition, the role will support a wide array of projects that require technical research and application. Projects include acquisition, integration, strategic tax planning, cross‑border compliance, and risk management.

Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance and Reporting
  • Develop processes and efficiencies including automation for tax provision, tax reporting, and compliance processes.
  • Lead the review and preparation of quarterly and annual tax provisions including note disclosures in accordance with IFRS.
  • Review new significant contracts to evaluate appropriate IFRS tax accounting treatment and disclosure requirements.
  • Monitor and evaluate new IFRS tax accounting developments and regulatory updates, assess their impact on the organization, and lead implementation of required process or reporting changes.
  • Assist with financial budgets, forecasts, and cash tax projections.
  • Oversight of the corporate direct tax reporting and compliance function.
  • Manage transfer pricing documentation, policy development, and compliance.
Tax Advisory Support
  • Provide practical, business‑aligned advice on tax implications of North America sales, digital services, product launches, intercompany arrangements, and supply chain design.
  • Assist post‑acquisition integration and entity rationalization.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., Finance, Legal, Sales Ops and Procurement support teams) to ensure tax‑compliant business operations and scalable solutions.
  • Engage and collaborate with external tax advisors on special projects and restructuring initiatives.
  • Research and prepare technical positions for complicated tax matters.
  • Draft written communications to stakeholders, including memoranda, opinion letters, and reports.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
  • Lead, mentor, and support tax team growth and contribute to recruitment, onboarding, and training where applicable.
Systems, Process, and Automation
  • Drive automation of compliance processes, including data gathering, reconciliation, and return preparation.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and audit readiness.
Audit & Risk Management
  • Manage tax audits and authority queries.
  • Ensure documentation and data retention policies are met for audit readiness.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate tax uncertainty through strong controls and oversight.
Specific Skills & Knowledge
  • 8+ years combined experience with Big 4 public accounting firm and industry.
  • Strong technical background in Canadian income tax.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in IFRS, and reviewing tax provisions for large multinational companies.
  • Experience in US tax matters.
  • Ability to use initiative, judgement, and work with minimum supervision.
  • Strong analytical awareness and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English (second language preferred).
  • Proven experience in managing a team of tax professionals.
  • Ability to build and maintain good working relationships with all levels of personnel.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Power BI).
  • Proficient in tax returns and provision software (Taxprep, Alteryx, OneStream).
Education & Experience
  • Chartered Professional Accountant designation or equivalent.
  • Completed CICA In‑depth tax course, Master of Tax degree or equivalent.
