Job description

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Systems Engineer (Rail) to join our Systems Engineering, Information Management and Rail Engineering Management practice, within our Consulting Engineering division. With shared office locations in Manchester, Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Swindon and Cardiff, we welcome applications from candidates across these regions and elsewhere in the UK.

You’ll become part of our vibrant, inclusive community that celebrates our differences and makes a real impact across the UK.

What will the role offer?

The standard working week is 37.5 hours, and we offer a range of flexible working practices, including hybrid, part‑time and adaptable working patterns, allowing you to adjust how you work as your life evolves.

Key Projects

As an appointed Design Partner on some of the UK’s most significant and complex rail and highways infrastructure projects, we are proud to support major programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, Northwest & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans‑Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail.

Our in‑house engineering teams deliver design and systems solutions across all Network Rail project stages and multiple disciplines, driving improved connectivity, enhancing passenger journeys, and shaping the future of infrastructure safety and efficiency.

These programmes also provide a diverse range of opportunities for personal and professional development, whether you are working on long‑term, high‑value frameworks or smaller, community‑focused initiatives. With these frameworks in place, you will have the opportunity to influence infrastructure projects that shape the region’s future.

What you will be doing:

Our Senior Systems Engineers play a pivotal role within Amey’s Systems Engineering capability, working closely with clients such as Network Rail and other major infrastructure organisations.

You will lead and support the delivery of whole‑system engineering solutions, ensuring effective integration across infrastructure, rolling stock, operations and maintenance.

Responsibilities include:
  • Applying Systems Engineering principles and techniques to define, integrate and deliver complex multi‑disciplinary engineering solutions
  • Leading and supporting requirements management and Verification & Validation (V&V) activities, including:
    • Developing project requirements from the Client Remit and managing change
    • Managing traceability and satisfaction linkages across multiple requirement levels
    • Apportioning requirements into delivery scope packages
    • Supporting verification and undertaking validation activities
  • Managing the integration of infrastructure change with Operations and Maintenance organisations
  • Supporting and overseeing systems integration testing
  • Producing and implementing:
    • Systems Engineering Management Plans (SEMP)
    • Systems Integration Plans (SIP)
    • RAM / SRAM Plans, including support to setting RAM targets
  • Preparing and reviewing technical reports, studies and programmes of work
  • Supporting the application of CDM Regulations and Safe‑by‑Design principles
  • Providing guidance, review and mentoring support to more junior engineers
We want to hear from you if you have:
  • Developed experience and expertise in the application of systems engineering processes, gained within complex engineering or infrastructure environments
  • Demonstrable experience delivering requirements management and V&V on major, multi‑disciplinary projects
  • Experience within the rail sector or wider infrastructure systems (desirable)
  • Experience managing interfaces across infrastructure, rolling stock, operations and maintenance
  • Experience using Bentley ComplyPro or IBM DOORS (desirable)
  • A proven track record in delivering technically sound engineering solutions in line with relevant standards and client requirements
  • Experience working on multi‑disciplinary projects, with knowledge across one or more infrastructure disciplines
  • Strong understanding of design processes and procedures
  • Knowledge of CDM Regulations, systems safety and CSM‑REA (desirable)
  • A solid grasp of engineering management practices for delivering multi‑disciplinary railway infrastructure projects
  • Successful completion of initial professional development leading to Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status (or working towards)
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in an appropriate engineering discipline, or demonstrable equivalent experience
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, client‑focused approach
