Job summary

Mott MacDonald is recruiting a Senior Systems Engineer within the Nuclear; Defence and Civil division. The role focuses on leading workshops, developing system architectures, and delivering key SE artefacts to meet project timelines.

You will work with clients, designers, and multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring robust requirements management and interface control across regulated environments. UK Security Clearance is required for eligibility.

Qualifications

  • Experience with MBSE and architectural development against an Architectural Framework.

Responsibilities

  • Lead stakeholder workshops and define the system boundary and concept of operations.
  • Develop and manage system requirements throughout the lifecycle using appropriate tools.
  • Create system architectural views (functional, physical) and identify interfaces.
  • Produce technical artefacts for reviews and client deliverables; mentor junior staff.

The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Overview of the role

Our Nuclear; Defence and Civil division is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer. This role involves working closely with clients, designers, other systems engineers. You will lead stakeholder workshops, develop system architectures, and will be expected to meet deadlines set for key systems engineering deliverables, including:

  • Project Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP)
  • Requirements and Acceptance Management Strategy (RAMS) & Plan (RAMP)
  • Interface Management Plan
  • System Requirements Specification
  • System Architecture Description
  • System/ Subsystem Design Descriptions
  • Interface Control Documents
  • System Integration Management Plan

Our team provides a range of key services, including:

  • Requirements Management
  • System Architecture Development and Modelling
  • Technical Interface Management and System Integration
  • Design Assurance, Verification, and Validation Management
  • Configuration Management

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Influence, capture and translate stakeholder vision and define the scope and boundary of the system, along with its Concept of Operations
  • Propose, develop and manage system requirements throughout the system lifecycle, using an appropriate requirements management tool
  • Develop all required system architectural views (functional and physical), including, but not limited to Functional, System and Spatial Breakdown Structures
  • Apply appropriate scenario modelling and role modelling techniques to contribute to capability assurance evidence
  • Work with designers to define internal and external system technical interfaces
  • Identification and management of technical assumptions, dependencies and constraints
  • Develop and review systems engineering artefacts, as necessary, to support technical reviews and client deliverables
  • Generate and manage objective Verification & Validation evidence
  • Support configuration management of the system design baseline and contribute to impact assessments and management of technical change
  • Organise and lead stakeholder workshops, defining metrics and acceptance criteria
  • Communicate complex technical content clearly to stakeholders at all levels and collaborate effectively across multi-disciplinary engineering teams
  • Produce high quality technical reports, presentations and project artefacts as required by company processes and project delivery
  • Support and mentor junior staff, overseeing task supervision and professional development
Candidate specification

Essential:

  • Strong understanding of systems engineering techniques applied across the entire engineering lifecycle, with demonstrable experience in a significant portion of the lifecycle
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly
  • Strong background in requirements development, preferably for infrastructure projects
  • Knowledge and experience in applying a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach, including system architecture development against an Architectural Framework
  • Knowledge of System Integration, Test, Evaluation and Acceptance strategies
  • Proficiency in use of typical systems engineering toolsets, e.g. for requirement management (DOORS, or similar) and architecture definition (Sparx EA, or similar)
  • Excellent written communication skills with a methodical, detail-focused approach
  • Preferably experience in infrastructure projects and ideally the nuclear sector. However, experience in developing complex systems in any highly regulated, multi-disciplinary engineering industry is valued
  • Degree level qualification, or equivalent, in a technical discipline
  • Preferably professionally registered as an engineer, or willing to work towards

Due to the sensitivity of some of our projects, candidates will be required to apply for and obtain UK Security Clearance.
