The role

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll be part of a team that plays a vital role in sustaining Royal Navy submarines throughout their lifecycle. You’ll lead the delivery of innovative In-Water Engineering (IWE) solutions that directly support submarine availability and readiness for operations at sea.

Day-to-day, you’ll be part of a centre of excellence within our Engineering Services Directorate, applying your expertise to deliver technical solutions that make a real-world impact.

  • Leading the In-Water Engineering work package to support submarine availability objectives
  • Developing and delivering innovative engineering design solutions in collaboration with industry and MOD stakeholders
  • Conducting feasibility studies and validating technical recommendations
  • Managing engineering workstreams and ensuring timely project delivery
  • Facilitating working groups and driving collaboration across internal and external teams

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 3 days in the office/onsite and 2 days working from home.

Essential experience of the Senior Systems Engineer
  • Proven background in engineering design and sustainment projects within the maritime sector
  • Ability to conduct technical feasibility studies and develop actionable recommendations
  • Skilled in leading cross‑functional teams and engaging stakeholders effectively
  • Proficient in project management methodologies with a track record of successful delivery
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills to manage complex technical challenges
Qualifications for the Senior Systems Engineer
  • Degree in a STEM discipline (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Data or Math’s) or equivalent experience
  • Incorporated or Chartered member of a recognised STEM body such as IMechE, IMarEST or IET
