Job description
Senior System Modelling Specialist - Waste Water

Scotland, United Kingdom

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

Scottish Water is expanding its Wastewater Intelligent Networks Initiative (WWIN) and associated hydraulic modelling activities to support the understanding of our Wastewater networks performance. We are looking for a Senior System Modelling Specialist to join our growing team.

About the Role

In this role, you’ll develop, deliver, and promote the use of near real-time (NRT) data within our hydraulic models to colleagues across the business. In conjunction we will use our model stock to provide inputs into our network monitoring strategies and capabilities. You’ll be part of a strong, collaborative team that maintains great relationships with key stakeholders and stays up-to-date with the latest industry-leading techniques and technologies.

You’ll play a vital part in an exciting and growing team that provides important technical expertise to many Scottish Water functions, from operational activities via our field teams through to strategic insights, while also helping to improve our understanding and management of our network assets.

You’ll work closely with the Modelling and WWIN teams to support and manage the enablement of modelling data within a WWIN context, all while aligning with Scottish Water’s overall vision and goals.

What you’ll do

You’ll apply a variety of hydraulic modelling techniques in either a business environment or a research-focused university setting.

Lead and coordinate projects and processes, ensuring high-quality results are delivered on time.

Take charge of communicating project progress and any challenges clearly with management and other stakeholders.

Successfully manage and deliver work packages and projects from start to finish.

Break down complex business problems and translate modelling results into easy-to-understand insights for colleagues who may not be familiar with hydraulic modelling. This will enable the WWIN and modelling teams extract the value present within out model stock and make this available to wider teams and processes.

Use ICM and ICM Live or similar modelling software with confidence and expertise.

What you’ll need

You’ll be a team player who helps produce great outputs and contributes to the team’s overall success.

Work closely with the team leader, asset management colleagues, and others to support business goals and deliver on key requirements.

Help drive the business benefits associated with integrating NRT data into our models and vice versa, enabling operational and strategic benefits to be realised.

Help improve models and data driven insights by regularly communicating with colleagues, gathering their feedback, enabling the value inherently present within our model estate within an operational and NRT lens.

Create business papers, presentations, dashboards, or tools that clearly explain hydraulic model data and results so they’re easy for others to understand and use. Building confidence in both our models and network monitor data.

Support the development and promotion of the WWIN Teams strategy.

Represent Scottish Water at important industry events and conferences.

Stay up to date with the latest developments in the water industry and academia, and actively pursue your own professional growth.

You will need to travel to either our Fairmilehead or Stepps office when required

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events, we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? Applications with part time or flexible working requirements will also be considered.

For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 7. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £44,030. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £55,000.

If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until midnight on 12th November 2025.

We operate Balanced Hybrid working at Scottish Water and we encourage people to work half their time in a Scottish Water location.

Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. These checks are conducted on our behalf by a third party. Don’t worry - we’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.

A few final things worth knowing…

Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.

Please note, Scottish Water takes the safety, health and wellbeing of our employees, colleagues and customers very seriously and as such you may be subject to Drug & Alcohol testing in line with our policy.

Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
