Main duties of the job

Histology Specimen Dissection – Day‑to‑day management of the dissection area and specimen reception sections within the laboratory under the supervision of the Operational lead for that area.

Develop and improve professional expertise and specialist skills, and actively participate in the training programmes required for the advanced dissection role.

Working time apportionment: 80% dissection (A‑E grade specimens where training and competency have been completed or consultant supervision is in place); 20% routine advanced BMS duties including managing and coordinating the cut‑up or routine section of the histopathology laboratory. The role may be shared by other Advanced BMS posts.

Clinical audit will be completed periodically to demonstrate ongoing clinical effectiveness.

Manage performance and undertake appraisals of junior staff, and take responsibility for first‑line reporting and management of absence for junior staff including return‑to‑work procedures.
