Job summary

Marks & Spencer is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Software Engineering team in a hybrid UK role. You will design, build, release and maintain scalable software, providing technical leadership on complex initiatives and shaping solutions that deliver value across the business.

You will work on modern backend-focused systems using Kotlin, GraphQL/REST, and MVVM architectures, collaborating with stakeholders and driving engineering excellence across pipelines and deployments.

Qualifications

  • Strong backend experience and software engineering best practices.
  • Understanding of MVC, SOLID, DRY and KISS principles.
  • Proficiency with Git and distributed version control.
  • Experience with TDD/BDD and non-functional testing approaches.
  • DevOps mindset with "you build it, you run it" approach.

Responsibilities

  • Write, test and debug code for complex features and migrations, optimise deployment pipelines.
  • Provide technical leadership and estimation on high-impact projects.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions aligning with long-term tech strategy.
  • Review code and provide constructive feedback for maintainability and quality.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders including senior leaders and external partners.

Summary

Join the M&S Software Engineering team and help build solutions that serve millions of customers and thousands of colleagues. As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll join an engineering-led organisation where technology is central to our transformation and future success.

We're looking for a passionate software engineer with strong technical expertise, a collaborative mindset and a commitment to engineering excellence. You'll play a key role in designing, building, releasing and maintaining products, providing technical leadership on complex initiatives and helping shape scalable solutions that deliver value across the business.

What you'll do
  • Writing, testing and debugging code for complex features, distributed systems and legacy migrations, while helping optimise deployment pipelines.
  • Providing technical leadership, guidance and estimation on complex, high-impact projects, ensuring successful delivery of software solutions.
  • Contributing to architectural and design decisions that align with business requirements, long-term technology strategy and engineering standards.
  • Reviewing code and providing constructive feedback to ensure maintainability, quality and adherence to technical standards.
  • Collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders, including senior leaders, engineers and external partners, while contributing to engineering communities of practice.

Who you are
  • Strong experience in a modern backend-focused technology environment and software engineering best practices.
  • Expert understanding of software development principles and patterns, including MVC, SOLID, DRY and KISS.
  • Solid expertise using distributed version control systems such as Git.
  • Proficiency with Test Driven Development (TDD), Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) and non-functional testing approaches.
  • Strong DevOps mindset with experience operating services and solutions using a "you build it, you run it" approach.
