Job summary

Bloomberg's News Automation Platform team in London is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design and evolve scalable, backend systems powering automated news and insights.

You'll contribute to a platform publishing thousands of stories daily, using Python, Kafka, Redis, Docker, and modern frontend tech where appropriate, with a focus on reliability, observability and AI-assisted development.

Qualifications

The role

Bloomberg News operates one of the richest financial data ecosystems in the world. The News Automation team builds the distributed systems and AI-powered tools that turn signals hidden in that data into clear, timely content for our clients.

Our platform publishes around 12,000 stories every day, accounting for more than 10% of Bloomberg News readership. It powers critical coverage including company earnings, economic indicators and bond issuance, where speed, accuracy and reliability really matter.

We are at an exciting point in the evolution of the platform. We are modernising its architecture, building better observability and data governance, developing intelligent anomaly detection, creating AI-powered tools for editors and reporters, and expanding the ways automated insights can be used across Bloomberg.

Our work is primarily backend focused, with some frontend development. We use Python, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis, Zookeeper, Docker, TypeScript and React, alongside LLMs and AI-assisted development. We have a strong testing culture and care about building software that is readable, reliable and easy to evolve.

We are a collaborative team and try not to create silos around individual projects. Engineers have the opportunity to understand different parts of the platform, contribute to technical decisions, own projects and work directly with colleagues in News, Product and Engineering.

We’ll trust you to:

• Design, build and evolve software that powers automated news and insights at significant scale
• Take ownership of projects from early ideas and technical design through implementation, testing and production
• Help modernise our distributed content-generation platform, improving its performance, flexibility, scalability and maintainability
• Build tools that improve observability and data governance, making it easier to trace data from source to publication and understand issues when they occur
• Develop intelligent systems that identify anomalies in the content we produce while keeping false positives under control
• Contribute to AI-powered tools that help editors and reporters work more efficiently, with a strong focus on accuracy, evaluation and user experience
• Collaborate with Newsroom, Product and Engineering teams to turn sometimes ambiguous needs into practical technical solutions
• Improve the reliability, testing and operability of our systems, and contribute ideas on how we can make the platform and our engineering practices better

You’ll need to have:

• 4+ years of Experience developing production software in Python, Java, C++ or a similar programming language
• Strong software engineering fundamentals, with experience building reliable, maintainable and well-tested production systems
• Experience designing, building or evolving distributed-system with strong focus on architectural trade-offs
• The ability to break down problems, consider trade-offs and work towards practical solutions
• A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues
• A sense of ownership and curiosity about the systems you work on
• A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, a similar field of study, or equivalent practical experience

We’d love to see:

• Experience building or operating high-throughput event-driven systems
• Experience with event-driven architectures or messaging technologies such as Kafka or RabbitMQ
• Experience with observability, data lineage or data governance
• Experience building applications using LLMs, including prompting, evaluation or testing of AI systems
• Experience with TypeScript, React or other frontend technologies
• An interest in improving engineering practices, sharing knowledge and learning from others
