Civica UK Ltd is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to transform complex business problems into robust, scalable software. You will work across legacy modernization and greenfield projects, embedded in product teams, delivering production-ready systems that affect public services.

You will apply architectural reasoning, collaborate with product and design teams, and drive quality through testing, observability, and documentation.

Qualifications

• Ability to decompose ambiguous problems into clear system designs and architectures.
• Experience shipping production-grade software across full lifecycle, from spec to deployment.
• Experience in legacy modernization alongside greenfield development.
• Strong collaboration with product, design and engineers to understand problems and trade-offs.

Responsibilities

• Decompose ambiguous problems into clear system designs, making architectural decisions for maintainability.
• Design, build, and ship production-ready software across the full lifecycle, from specification through deployment.
• Work across mixed environments—legacy modernization and greenfield development within the same product.
• Own technical decisions for complex system components, articulating trade-offs to product managers and principal engineers.
• Define what good looks like for your area of the codebase—testing strategy, code quality, observability and documentation.
• Collaborate with product, design and other engineers to understand the real problem before building.
• Build and ship complex, real-world software systems, owning meaningful pieces end-to-end.
• Think in terms of system boundaries, failure modes and interactions between components.
• Decompose problems under ambiguity and translate business needs into structured technical approaches.
• Maintain production-quality discipline—testing, observability, error handling and operability.
• Communicate trade-offs to non-engineers and build consensus on decisions.
• Demonstrate learning agility across stacks and domains.
• Show ownership and initiative to resolve issues in production.
