Job summary

Lightning AI seeks a Senior Software Engineer to design and build the backend systems powering our agent platform. You will work on orchestration frameworks, tool execution, workflow management, memory and state handling, and developer-facing APIs enabling customers to build sophisticated AI applications.

You'll collaborate with Core Platform, Training & Experimentation, Sandboxes, and Optimized Compute teams to deliver scalable, reliable, and developer-friendly platform capabilities across hubs

Qualifications

• Extensive experience building scalable backend systems using Go, Python, Rust or similar languages.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, asynchronous processing, APIs and cloud-native architecture.
• Hands-on experience building backend platforms, developer tools, or infrastructure products.

What We’re Looking For

The Agents team at Lightning AI is building the infrastructure that powers the next generation of AI applications. As AI agents move from prototypes to production, developers need reliable systems for orchestrating workflows, coordinating models, executing tools, and managing long-running state. Our goal is to provide the platform and abstractions that make building production‑ready agentic applications as simple as deploying any modern software service.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help design and build the backend systems that power Lightning AI's agent platform. You'll work on orchestration frameworks, tool execution, workflow management, memory and state handling, and developer‑facing APIs that enable customers to build sophisticated AI applications with confidence.

You'll partner closely with engineers across Core Platform, Training & Experimentation, Sandboxes, and Optimized Compute to deliver platform capabilities that are reliable, scalable, and intuitive for developers.

This role is based in one of our San Francisco, NYC, or London office hubs, with a minimum of 2 in-office days per week and occasional team and company offsites. We are not able to provide visa sponsorship for this position at this time.

What You’ll Need

• Extensive experience building scalable backend systems using Go, Python, Rust, or similar languages.


• Strong understanding of distributed systems, asynchronous processing, APIs, and cloud-native application architecture.


• Experience designing and operating production services at scale.


• Hands-on experience building backend platforms, developer tools, or infrastructure products.


• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure and container technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.


• Proven ability to take ownership of large technical initiatives from architecture through production.


• Commitment to software quality, automated testing, observability, and continuous delivery.


• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, product, research, and design teams.


• Ability to thrive in fast-moving, ambiguous environments while balancing technical excellence with product impact.

Compensation

We are committed to offering competitive compensation that reflects the value each team member brings to our mission. Final offers are based on factors such as experience, skills, geographic location, and role expectations. In addition to base salary, our total rewards package for eligible roles includes a discretionary bonus, a meaningful equity component, and comprehensive benefits.

The anticipated annual base salary range for this role is: $180,000 — $250,000 USD
