Job summary

Siemens Mobility in Hebburn (UK) is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design and develop embedded firmware for power system protection devices. You will work across hardware, software, and test teams to deliver robust C/C++ solutions with real‑time constraints and Linux‑based embedded environments.

You will optimise kernels/bootloaders, implement unit and integration tests, participate in code reviews, and produce clear technical documentation while adhering to Siemens development processes

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering or related technical discipline.
  • Experience in embedded software development using C/C++.
  • Proficiency with Linux in embedded environments; kernel/bootloader customization (U-Boot).
  • Strong knowledge of software design principles and version control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and developing embedded software using C/C++.

We're seeking a talented Senior Software Engineer to join our multidisciplinary engineering team. In this pivotal role, you'll be instrumental in designing and developing embedded software for our cutting‑edge power system protection devices. You'll contribute to delivering high‑quality, robust, and maintainable firmware solutions that meet stringent functional, performance, and reliability requirements for systems that truly matter.

As our Senior Software Engineer, you'll be at the heart of our product development, crafting the embedded intelligence that drives our devices. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and developing embedded software using C/C++.
  • Implementing new product features and enhancements
  • Investigating and resolving software defects and customer‑reported issues
  • Developing and executing unit, integration, and system‑level testing
  • Actively participating in code reviews and contributing to continuous software quality improvements
  • Producing and maintaining clear, comprehensive technical documentation
  • Working closely with hardware, systems, test, and product management teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Following company development processes, coding standards, and quality procedures
  • Providing production and post‑production support
  • A degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience in embedded software development using C/C++.
  • Understanding of microcontrollers and embedded systems architecture.
  • Understanding of software design principles and version control systems.
  • Ability to analyse technical problems and develop practical solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of Linux OS in embedded environments, including customization and optimisation of the Linux kernel and bootloader (Uboot) for embedded targets.
  • Ability to analyse complex technical problems and develop practical, efficient solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly present ideas and results
  • Strong interpersonal and problem‑solving skills.
Desirable but not essential
  • Experience with ARM Cortex‑based processors.
  • Knowledge of RTOS platforms such as FreeRTOS.
  • Experience with various communication protocols (e.g., SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, TCP/IP).
  • Familiarity with software quality tools, static analysis, and automated testing frameworks.
  • Exposure to industrial control, protection, or automation systems.
