Join us as a Senior Software Engineer and help shape the future of Barclays Payments Merchant Services. We build secure, scalable solutions that let merchants process payments with ease. Every day, we support millions of transactions that keep businesses moving. In this role, you’ll help modernize our technology stack and create innovative payment experiences. You’ll also maintain and improve the core legacy application that powers these services.

You’ll collaborate with teams across the business to deliver high-quality releases, assist with testing, and ensure smooth deployments. To be successful as a Senior Software Engineer, you should have experience with:

  • Extensive experience working with large legacy applications, including troubleshooting, adding new features and applying strategies to modernize and integrate monolithic architectures.
  • Java development, with the ability to design and implement enterprise‑grade applications using object‑oriented design approaches and optimize performance.
  • SQL, including writing advanced queries, tuning database performance, and ensuring data integrity across large‑scale transactional systems.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Designing secure and scalable RESTful APIs with clear documentation and versioning best practices.
  • Practical experience with application servers, ideally JBoss, including deploying, configuring, and tuning applications for high availability and resilience in production environments.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems concepts and modernization approaches, even if microservices adoption is limited due to legacy constraints.

This role will be based in Fleet.

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities
  • Development and delivery of high‑quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross‑functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
