Jobtailor is seeking an experienced senior engineer to lead modernization of COBOL/DB2-based enterprise systems toward scalable, cloud-aligned architectures. Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience).
5+ years of experience in mainframe application development using COBOL, JCL, CICS, and DB2.
Proven track record of maintaining and enhancing mission-critical enterprise systems.
Demonstrated ability to analyze complex legacy applications and identify modernization opportunities.
Growth mindset with a strong desire to expand skills into distributed systems and cloud technologies.
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure and API or event-driven architectures (preferred).

Responsibilities

Oversee technical aspects of regional EMEA, APA, and LATAM corporate hierarchy and limits applications.
Maintain secure, resilient, and highly available critical systems.
Contribute to modernization of mainframe-based systems toward scalable, cloud-aligned architectures.
Maintain and enhance COBOL/DB2-based applications.
Advance distributed, API-driven, and event-based solutions.
Lead and mentor engineering teams and ensure adherence to team standards.
Ensure accurate, high-quality documentation and engineering deliverables.
Perform data architecture and database management, including prototypes, database structures, and APIs.
Transform logical data architectures into physical data designs.
Provide database administration for databases, data warehouses, and datamarts.
Debug database components and remediate design and performance defects.
Refactor database designs and improve data placement and database reuse.
Ensure data replication, performance, high availability, backup, and recovery meet requirements.
Develop data management, data security, data product, and process strategies and standards.
Lead data assets within an Agile team according to enterprise standards and policies.
Spend approximately 50% of time on database development and testing and the remainder collaborating with partners on product/platform releases.
Collaborate with business, product, architecture, engineering, and delivery teams.
Prioritize sprint features and maintain data requirements based on trends, technologies, defects, and issues.
Design data-tier solutions supporting enterprise platform objectives.
Drive adoption of DBMS features and participate in vendor product development strategy.
Contribute to tool, method, and approach decisions and identify innovative technology opportunities.
Work with product owners on blueprints and annual planning for features affecting multiple platforms and products.
Review own work and lead reviews of colleagues’ work.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience)
5+ years of experience in mainframe application development using COBOL, JCL, CICS, and DB2
Proven track record of maintaining and enhancing mission-critical enterprise systems
Demonstrated ability to analyze complex legacy applications and identify modernization opportunities
Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills
Growth mindset with a strong desire to expand skills into distributed systems and cloud technologies
Familiarity with modern programming languages such as Java, Scala, Kotlin (preferred)
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure and API or event-driven architectures (preferred)
Understanding of mainframe modernization strategies, including rehosting, refactoring, or replacement (preferred)
Experience in financial services or similar large-scale transactional systems (preferred)
Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, Git-based source control, and Agile development methodologies (preferred)
Visa sponsorship may be provided for certain positions depending on business requirements, cost, and applicable laws
Expert knowledge of XML and schema development/reuse, RDBMS databases, and open source
Strong knowledge of metadata management and database management
Deep technical knowledge of DBMS products and ecosystems, including storage formats, access algorithms, administration, replication, high availability, encryption, and data maintenance
Ability to monitor and tune databases and DBMSs for high performance
Working knowledge of application planning, analysis, development, testing, configuration, and maintenance tools
Practical experience with infrastructure technologies including servers, JVMs, and networking concepts
Ability to participate in Agile delivery methodology
Knowledge of industry best practices, processes, and standards
Knowledge of complete vertical platform environments and technical stacks
Experience with Db2, COBOL, on-premises environments, automation testing, GitHub Actions, GitHub Enterprise Server, and GHEC
