Job summary

Sanderson Government & Defence is seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer to design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js and TypeScript. You will build RESTful APIs, microservices, and cloud-native solutions while collaborating with stakeholders and DevOps to improve CI/CD pipelines.

You will mentor junior developers, participate in architecture discussions, and ensure best practices are followed in an Agile delivery environment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of commercial software development experience.
• Proficient in Node.js and TypeScript with REST API and microservices experience.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP).
• Familiarity with SQL and NoSQL databases and containerised environments.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Developer with strong Node.js expertise to join a growing engineering team. You will play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend services and cloud-native applications.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend applications using Node.js and TypeScript.
• Develop and consume RESTful APIs and microservices.
• Build scalable, secure, and high-performing cloud-native solutions.
• Work closely with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
• Participate in architecture discussions and technical design workshops.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
• Conduct code reviews and champion engineering best practices.
• Mentor junior and mid-level developers.
• Collaborate with DevOps teams to improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes.
• Troubleshoot production issues and optimise system performance.
• Contribute to Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and backlog refinement.

Essential Skills & Experience

• 5+ years of commercial software development experience.
• Strong experience developing applications using Node.js.
• Proficient in TypeScript and modern JavaScript (ES6+).
• Experience building REST APIs and microservices.
• Strong understanding of asynchronous programming and event-driven architectures.
• Experience working with SQL and/or NoSQL databases.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience with Docker and containerised environments.
• Strong knowledge of software engineering principles, design patterns, and best practices.
• Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working within Agile delivery teams.
