Senior Scientist (2-year contract)

Our client is seeking a dynamic and passionate Senior Scientist to join a multidisciplinary team.

Role Overview

As a Senior Scientist, you will spearhead our upstream process development for recombinant protein production. This is a fantastic opportunity to influence both scientific direction and team growth over a 24-month contract.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the charge in upstream process development, focusing on recombinant protein production.
  • Provide scientific leadership and technical guidance to team members and project teams.
  • Translate expression optimisation from shake flasks to bioreactors as the technical lead.
  • Design and refine expression methods to enhance protein quality.
  • Investigate how expression conditions affect protein quality attributes across key projects.
  • Collaborate across functions to drive overall process improvements.
  • Champion optimisations in upstream processes using a data‑led approach.
  • Ensure compliance with company HSE policies while working safely.
Essential Qualifications
  • Post Doc or equivalent experience in Biotechnology, Microbiology, or related disciplines.
  • 8+ years of hands‑on experience in upstream bioprocessing with expertise in:
  • Recombinant protein expression (bacterial, insect, yeast, or plant systems).
  • Working with bioreactors and transferring shake flask processes into bioreactors.
  • Protein purification methods and techniques.
  • Strong troubleshooting and innovative problem‑solving abilities.
  • Comprehensive understanding of how upstream decisions impact downstream processing outcomes.
  • Excellent communication skills to present complex concepts clearly.
Desirable Experience
  • Knowledge of construct design and its impact on protein expression.
  • Familiarity with AI tools for experimental design.
  • Experience with Ambr250 micro bioreactor systems.
  • Background in protein characterisation to validate protein quality.
  • Experience with scalable bioprocess technologies, such as Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF).
  • Industry experience in Biopharma, AgriTech, or related sectors.
