Job summary

The Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) Oxford invites applications for a Scientist/Senior Scientist in Plant Metabolic Engineering. Lead development of metabolic engineering and synthetic biology approaches to optimise plant respiration, energy status and redox balance in cell cultures, then translate to whole plants for productivity.

You will contribute to IP and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to drive high-impact plant science, with opportunities to move discoveries toward

Qualifications

• PhD in Plant Biology, Synthetic Biology, Metabolic Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience in plant metabolic engineering and synthetic biology.
• Experience measuring respiration, energy status, redox balance and related parameters.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement and characterise engineering strategies to manipulate plant respiration, energy, and redox balance.
• Lead experiments in plant cell cultures and whole plants, ensuring translation between systems.
• Lead phenotyping using physiological, biochemical, imaging and multi-omics approaches.
• Apply iterative design–build–test–learn cycles to refine strategies.
• Advance strategies into whole plants for validation and performance gains.
• Drive rigorous experimental design and reproducible scientific outcomes.
• Present work at internal seminars and external meetings, contribute to field developments.
• Mentor team members and assist translation of results into commercial opportunities.
