SENIOR SCIENCE TECNICIAN
Salary: Band D – Actual Salary (adjusted for term time working): £24,633 - £28,158
Full Time Equivalent Salary: £27,254 - £31,022 per annum
Hours: 37 per week, Term Time + 1.6 weeks
Location: The Phoenix Collegiate, Clarkes Lane, West B71 2BX
Contract: Permanent

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly skilled Senior Science Technician to join our vibrant and well‑equipped Science Department. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in supporting high‑quality science education across all year groups, 7 – 13 within a positive and collaborative school culture committed to high quality STEM education.

The successful candidate will lead a team of three Science Technicians and oversee the effective preparation, organisation and delivery of all practical science work across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. You will ensure that teaching staff and students are supported with safe, engaging and curriculum‑appropriate experiments and practical activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work closely with teaching staff to plan, design and advise on practical experiments that enhance learning across all science disciplines.
  • Ensure the safe handling, storage and maintenance of all science equipment, including chemicals, biological specimens for dissection, and regulated materials such as radioactive sources, in line with current safety legislation and school policies.
  • Maintain accurate stock levels, place orders and manage budgets effectively to ensure resources are available and well maintained.
  • Uphold rigorous health and safety standards, completing risk assessments where required and ensuring compliance with COSHH and other relevant regulations.
  • Support the smooth running of the department by developing efficient workflows, maintaining the prep room and contributing to the ongoing improvement of practical provision.

Candidates should have significant experience working as a Science Technician, ideally in a secondary school or further education setting and a strong understanding of practical requirements across all core science subjects - including safe storage and handling of chemicals, biological materials and radioactive sources.

You should demonstrate the ability to lead, organise and motivate a team and excellent organisational skills with a proven record in prioritising workloads and managing deadlines. Excellent communication skills and high standards of accuracy, safety and professionalism are essential.

As a minimum, applicants should have obtained qualifications to A Level standard or equivalent, in a science related discipline. Further relevant technical or laboratory qualifications are desirable as is experience of stock control systems.
