Job summary

Thales in the UK is seeking a Senior/Principal System Safety Engineer to join a growing team delivering safety-critical defence and aerospace projects. You will lead safety assessments, influence design decisions, and ensure complex systems are demonstrably safe, reliable and compliant throughout their lifecycle.

You will develop safety artifacts, run HAZID and risk workshops, apply techniques like FHA, FMECA, FTA and Bow-Tie, and provide robust safety evidence to customers.

Qualifications

  • Experience in Functional or System Safety within a safety-critical environment.
  • Knowledge of Safety Management Systems and safety case development.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Understanding of DEF STAN 00-55/56, IEC 61508 or MIL-STD-882E.
  • Ability to assess risk, influence design decisions and solve complex engineering challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Lead safety engineering activities across the full project lifecycle.
  • Develop key Safety Artifacts such as Safety Cases, Safety Plans and Hazard Logs.
  • Conduct HAZID and risk assessment workshops using HAZOPs, STPA and SWIFT.
  • Apply qualitative and quantitative safety techniques including FHA, FMECA, FTA, ETA and Bow-Tie analysis.
  • Provide robust safety evidence and assurance to customers and stakeholders.
  • Support multiple projects across a range of innovative technologies and platforms.

We're looking for Safety Engineers at all levels to join our growing team, supporting a diverse portfolio of cutting-edge defence and safety-critical programmes. Working alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams, you'll lead safety assessments, influence design decisions, and ensure complex systems are demonstrably safe, reliable and compliant throughout their lifecycle.

What you'll do

What we're looking for

Desirable
  • Defence, Aerospace, Rail, Nuclear, Marine, Automotive or other safety-critical industry experience.
  • Experience in related disciplines such as RAM, Human Factors or EcoDesign.
  • Knowledge of UK MoD, MAA, CAA or Maritime regulatory environments.
