Job summary

AtkinsRéalis is recruiting for aRoad safety engineer to join our Wales and Southwest offices, with travel to client sites across the UK. You will contribute to road safety and operational safety projects, deliver RSAs, and support design standard updates.

The role requires degree qualification in Civil Engineering or Transport Planning, strong IT skills, and a willingness to travel. You will work within a proactive team, mentoring junior staff and contributing to business development while

Qualifications

  • Experience of road safety and operational safety projects from strategic advice through feasibility studies and delivery.
  • Technical awareness of local highways and active travel design standards.
  • Awareness of UK highway design requirements within DMRB and GG119/GG104.
  • Experience of undertaking RSAs in accordance with GG119 as RSA Team Member or Leader.
  • Ability to lead small technical pieces of work and manage workload.
  • Good understanding of the UK road safety market and geography.
  • Flexibility in project delivery and travel locations across the UK.
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholder and client relationships.
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Membership of ICE/CIHT/CILT/SoRSA.
  • Full driving licence.

Responsibilities

  • Produce studies for road safety and operational safety projects.
  • Carry out GG 119 Road Safety Audits (RSAs).
  • Provide ad-hoc advice on road safety and operational safety to clients.
  • Assist Transportation team with large projects and policy updates.
  • Support business development across the region.
  • Coach and train junior/graduate staff.
  • Deliver technical training sessions.
  • Manage stakeholder consultation processes as required.

Overview

This is a new role to support the wider road safety engineering team within the Highways and Active Travel Practice.

This is a new role to support the wider road safety engineering team within the Highways and Active Travel Practice.

The role will primarily focus on road safety engineering projects, road safety audits through assisting the wider team and leading on smaller projects.

The main aspects of work will include identifying and mitigating road safety engineering problems across various highway and active travel design projects, carrying out road safety audits, high level research projects and the formulation of highways design standards and guidance documents.

The ideal candidate will also be able and willing to assist with business development in the field of road safety and operational safety across the region.

The role is to be based within any of our Wales and Southwest offices, with some travel to other offices and project locations across the UK expected.

Your role
  • Production of studies for road safety and operational safety projects.
  • GG 119 Road Safety Audits.
  • Ad-hoc advice for internal and external clients with regards to road safety and operational safety projects.
  • Assisting the wider Transportation team with larger, complex projects such as UK standard, policy and guidance document updates.
  • Assistance with business development across the region.
  • Assistance with coaching and training of junior/graduate level staff.
  • Assistance with technical training delivery.
  • Managing stakeholder consultation processes as required.
Qualifications
About you
  • Degree qualified in a relevant subject (Civil Engineering / Transport Planning or similar).
Essential Criteria
  • Experience of road safety and operational safety related projects from strategic advice through to feasibility studies and scheme delivery.
  • Technical awareness of local highways and active travel design standards, policies and best practice.
  • Awareness of relevant UK highway design and road safety requirements within DMRB and others – such as GG 119 and GG 104.
  • Experience of undertaking RSAs in accordance with DMRB GG 119 as an RSA Team Member or Team Leader on the UK Trunk Road and Motorway network or meet the competencies to allow this.
  • An ability to lead small technical pieces of work such as feasibility studies, including managing and prioritising own workload.
  • A good understanding of the UK road safety engineering market and geography.
  • The ability to be flexible in terms of project delivery and working locations.
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholder and client relationships.
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Membership of relevant technical institutions – e.g. ICE, CIHT, CILT, SoRSA.
  • Full driving licence.
Desirable Criteria
  • Ability to assist with technical training seminars.
  • Experience of projects involving consultation events.
  • Certificate of Competency in Road Safety Auditing (Highways England).
  • Experience of safety risk assessments (to GG 104) on the trunk road and motorway network.
  • Highway design and active travel design experience.
  • GG 142 Lead Assessor.
