Job description

We have an exciting opportunity available. With funding from NIHR we will undertake a programme of research entitled 'Single and Safe Intervention for MEDication administration (SaSI-MEDs): The development and evaluation of an intervention to de-implement unnecessary double-checking of medicines'. We are seeking a Senior Research Fellow to work as part of a collaborative team to help deliver this research.

This post is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to develop their career, gaining experience of different research methods, including, in the later stages, clinical trials. The role of the Senior Research Fellow will be to plan and deliver this innovative programme of research. The programme is hosted within the Yorkshire Quality and Safety Research Group (YQSR) which boasts many externally funded patient safety research projects with research teams across the UK and internationally.

You will work alongside and collaborate with a health economist, qualitative researchers and triallists and will have support from a Research Fellow to deliver the research. In turn, you will work with guidance from the Programme Manager and senior academics from across the collaborating partner organisations.

You will be responsible for managing study design, recruitment and data collection and analysis and you will provide line management to at least one research fellow. The role will also include obtaining necessary ethical and governance approvals at project outset, for which support will be provided. Other responsibilities will include literature searching, working collaboratively with other team members, providing regular progress reports, disseminating the findings in different formats, including but not limited to publications, presentations, blogs, infographics, website content, social media, brief reports.

There is a strong focus on stakeholder engagement and impact, making this an ideal position for those who are keen to build their networks, develop their expertise in safety science and deliver research that makes a difference locally and nationally.

Key Responsibilities
  • Management and mentoring of junior research staff
  • Leading research design and conduct of qualitative and/or quantitative research, including data analysis
  • Overseeing good governance in research, including ethics, and information / data management
  • Managing applications for NHS research ethics committee approval
  • Anticipating and addressing problems in research delivery
  • Co‑ordinating and/or leading team meetings, including responsibility for documentation and liaising with external collaborators and stakeholders
  • Organising and planning staffing (Research nurses) to deliver data collection
  • Supporting annual reporting to NIHR
  • Reporting to the academic team and programme manager on project progress and outcomes to enable monitoring for and reporting to the NIHR
  • Engaging effectively with patients, the public, healthcare staff and other stakeholders to ensure our research meets the needs of these groups
  • Communicating effectively with policy makers to understand their needs and drivers
  • Leading and contributing to the writing and publication of academic papers and conference presentations
  • Enhancing the impact of our work through engagement with a variety of academic and non‑academic audiences (blogs, social media etc)
  • Collaborating with researchers and collaborators in other streams of activity within the programme and researchers in other research centres nationally and internationally
  • Engaging with colleagues within the YQSR group and the wider activities of this group
  • Active engagement and participation within the broader YQSR operations, culture and values, to promote a world‑class collaborative and multidisciplinary research environment
  • Undertaking relevant training and ensuring that research governance procedures and GDPR/data security procedures are adhered to
  • Undertaking personal development in keeping with the aspiration to be a national leader in patient safety research
