Job summary

Wanstead Hospital is seeking an experienced Senior Registered Veterinary Nurse to provide expert emergency and critical care nursing, anaesthesia, and clinical leadership. You will mentor junior staff and work closely with Veterinary Surgeons to maintain high standards of care across the hospital.

Qualifications

  • Registered Veterinary Nurse with valid RVN status.
  • Experience in emergency and critical care nursing.
  • Ability to lead a nursing team and mentor students.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver outstanding nursing care and maintain high patient welfare across all areas.
  • Nurse emergency and critical care patients, including unstable anaesthetics, triage, blood pressure monitoring, transfusions, chest drains, and jugular catheter management.
  • Assist veterinarians during consultations, surgery and diagnostics, utilizing Schedule 3 nursing skills.
  • Lead and support the nursing team as Clinical Supervisor.
  • Coordinate in-house training and CPD, including emergency drills and clinical protocols.
  • Maintain equipment, controlled drugs, crash trolley readiness, laboratory analysers and clinical documentation to ensure compliance.
  • Support day-to-day hospital operations, including weekend/Ad-hoc Charge Nurse duties and client care across reception and clinical teams.
  • Demonstrate organisation and teamwork with a proactive approach to improvement.

VA624 – Senior Registered Veterinary Nurse

Welcome to Wanstead Hospital! We're looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Veterinary Nurse with a passion for delivering exceptional patient care, supporting colleagues, and driving clinical excellence. You will be confident in emergency and critical care nursing, anaesthesia, and leadership, while helping to maintain high clinical standards across the practice.

You'll also mentor your team, helping them develop their skills and confidence, while working closely alongside our Veterinary Surgeons to ensure the Hospital continues to thrive.

Fully equipped consulting rooms, a spacious prep and theatre area, dedicated intensive care space and comprehensive in‑house laboratory team give you everything you need to provide our patients with the very best care. You will also have access to a dedicated colleague rest area for those all‑important lunch breaks.

This is a full‑time role with an average of 40 hours per week. Your rota will include a 1:6 weekend rotation and up to 3 bank holidays per year.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting veterinary surgeons during consultations, surgery and diagnostics, making full use of Schedule 3 nursing skills.
  • Leading and supporting the nursing team, acting as a role model and providing guidance to students and new starters as a Clinical Supervisor.
  • Coordinating and delivering in‑house training and CPD, including emergency crash drills and clinical protocols.
  • Maintaining and auditing clinical equipment, controlled drugs, crash trolley readiness, in‑house laboratory analysers and clinical documentation to ensure compliance and best practice.
  • Supporting the day‑to‑day running of the hospital, including weekend and ad‑hoc Charge Nurse duties, contributing to leadership meetings and helping to maintain excellent client care across reception and clinical teams.
  • Demonstrating excellent organisation, communication and teamwork, with a proactive approach to continuous improvement and quality assurance.
Benefits and Compensation

The salary band for this role inclusive of weekend rotation is £35,000 to £39,000 (FTE) depending on experience and allowing room for growth within the role.
