Job description

Job Title: Senior Research Advisor

Location: Newport / Hybrid (need to attend the Newport office for meetings as and when required)

Contract Duration: 31/3/26 (extension tbc)

Rate: £30/hr (Umbrella Maximum)

IR35 Status: Inside IR35

Security Clearance: SC

We are looking for a proactive Research Analyst to support work on measuring the physical stocks and depletion of natural resources in the UK. This role will play a key part in developing future natural capital accounts aligned with international statistical standards.

You will lead early-stage scoping work on data availability, quality, and methodologies for estimating renewable resource stocks with an initial focus on timber and fish.

What you ll do

  • Identify, collect, and review data from government departments, agencies, research bodies, and charities.
  • Conduct literature reviews of academic and grey sources on natural resource stock estimation.
  • Assess existing data on resource stocks, harvesting rates, and regeneration rates.
  • Identify gaps in current data and evaluate potential methodologies to estimate missing information.
  • Engage with data providers to understand available datasets and potential for future collaboration.
  • Produce clear, concise documentation outlining findings, recommendations, and viable strategies for future measurement work.

What you ll work on

Timber Resource Stocks

  • Map existing data sources on timber stock levels, harvesting, and regeneration.
  • Explore and evaluate methods for estimating timber stocks where data is limited.
  • Produce a report recommending at least one viable approach for future statistical production.

Fish Resource Stocks

  • Review available fish stock estimates and sustainability assessments for UK waters.
  • Assess reliability of current data and identify challenges in stock estimation.
  • Make initial contact with key organisations to understand the data landscape.

About you

Essential

  • Strong desk research skills and ability to assess the quality and limitations of data.
  • Quantitative background (e.g., environmental science, statistics, economics, geography, or similar).
  • Confident communicator with experience engaging stakeholders or external partners.
  • Ability to produce clear, structured written outputs at pace.

Desirable

  • Background or interest in environmental issues, forestry, fisheries, conservation, or natural capital.
  • Familiarity with international natural capital accounting frameworks.
