Senior Quantity Surveyor

Department: Commercial (Quantity Surveying)

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: Edinburgh Area

Reporting To: Chris Grant

Description

Join Careys as a Senior Quantity Surveyor, supporting the delivery of complex civil engineering projects across Edinburgh. You’ll lead on cost control, contract management, and commercial strategy across both minor and major contracts, working either in support of a Construction Partner or as Main Contractor. This is a great opportunity to take ownership of commercial outcomes while mentoring junior team members and driving value across the project lifecycle.

What you will be doing:
  • Build and manage strong supplier relationships, ensuring performance and compliance.
  • Provide expert support on dispute resolution and keep senior stakeholders informed.
  • Deliver post-contract commercial services, including budgeting, forecasting, and final accounts.
  • Support cost planning, benchmarking, and monthly performance reporting.
  • Lead change control processes and assess financial impacts of project changes.
  • Collaborate with Procurement to ensure robust strategies and oversee subcontractor management.
  • Ensure contractual compliance, risk mitigation, and accurate reporting.
  • Mentor and lead a team of Quantity Surveyors and support their development.
  • Drive innovation by integrating commercial activities across the business.
What you will bring:
  • 5+ years’ QS experience on major civil projects (infrastructure, rail, highways, utilities)
  • Strong NEC, FIDIC, JCT contract knowledge, including claims/disputes
  • Skilled in cost control, budgeting, forecasting, and risk management
  • Confident leader with team management and mentoring experience
  • Excellent stakeholder communication and negotiation skills
  • Pre- and post-contract expertise with strong financial accuracy
  • HND/Degree in Quantity Surveying or related field
  • RICS membership (or working towards) preferred
  • CSCS card required
