Senior Project Nurse - Elective Surgery Pathways

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Project Nurse to lead the implementation of Elective Surgery Pathways programme in the Abdominal Medicine and Surgery CSU. Post includes the leadership of a small team of ERAS and CNS practitioners with a view to expanding to fundamentals of ERAS practice across the CSU.

Main duties of the job

The Jobholder will play an essential role supporting Nursing and Midwifery (including ODP) education by facilitating education, training and practice development within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The job holder will facilitate the development of clinical staff both registered and non-registered.

The job holder will support the assessment of the quality of clinical and other practice learning environments and implement interventions for improvement.

The job holder will support mentors/assessors and clinical professional development for preceptorship.

The job holder will support the development of interdisciplinary and whole service working. As a role model they will promote the sharing of good practice and delivery of high quality, effective and efficient care.

To support, educate and develop registered and unregistered staff in their clinical role and competencies in order to deliver high quality evidence based care for service users.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate significant experience and clinical knowledge within Pancreas surgery, interventions and clinical management of this patient group as well as demonstrate leadership skills. The successful candidate will also need to be able to demonstrate experience in change management and leading projects to ensure the success of this role and a positive impact on our patients journey.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is committed to its 7 annual commitments for 2025/2026, which this role will play a vital part in supporting the CSU to achieving these through supporting those moments that matter to our patients and supporting our patients to get home a day sooner.

The appointee will work closely with the existing members of the surgical teams, including the Macmillan Cancer Nurse Specialists, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, ward based nurses and Surgeons, to provide advanced nursing expertise to patients undergoing surgery for pancreatic and upper GI cancers, whilst supporting the embedding of ERAS practices across the CSU. The role will broadly involve three aspects:

  • pre-operative education
  • clinical post-operative care of in-patients and the early post-discharge period
  • oversight of governance processes to collect and review data on peri- and post-operative complications, outcomes and quality metrics relating to the Enhanced Recovery Programme and Prescribed pathways

The postholder will be supported and line managed by the Quality and Education Lead Nurse.

Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse/AHP/midwife
  • Recognised teaching/assessing qualification.
  • Degree (desirable).
  • Qualification in or equivalent advanced specialist knowledge in quality improvement methodology (desirable).

10. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Management and Leadership

Be a clinical nurse/AHP/midwifery lead within the Corporate nursing teams.

To lead operational activities identified in project plans in order to manage and implement defined projects targets, notifying the managers when issues or problems occur. This will involve initiating, planning and organising work schedules and project plans.

Develop effective communication with nurses/AHP/midwifery and other healthcare professionals in order to foster a good understanding of clinical systems and the roles and responsibilities of staff who use them.

Identify the risks associated with the implementation of new projects, and to assist the other project leads in monitoring and reducing these risks.

To provide regular updates or progress reports to strategic collaborative groups as required by the project manager and assurance groups.

To manage any issues and concerns expressed by ward leaders, matrons and heads of nursing.

To build effective relationships with the managers and staff of designated departments and clinical areas, providing support.

To provide support for users on a one to one basis or in groups during ward visits.

To promote nursing/AHP/midwifery change projects and act as a champion to encourage acceptance by new users.

To be a positive role model for nursing/AHP/midwifery staff in relation to clinical practice and clinical change.

Financial responsibility for ordering stationery, posters etc.; although not actually holding the budget, the post holder will make decisions about purchase of goods volumes and type relating to the project remit.
