Job summary

SP Manweb PLC is seeking a Senior Project Manager to lead major capital investment, construction and customer connections projects across the licence area. You will manage projects through development, mobilisation, construction, commissioning, handover and close-out, ensuring safety, budget adherence and quality.

The role requires extensive experience in complex infrastructure projects, strong governance and contract management, with NEC3/NEC4 or FIDIC knowledge.

Qualifications

  • Degree in a relevant engineering, construction or project management discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience managing complex construction or infrastructure projects, preferably within electricity transmission or regulated infrastructure.
  • Experience leading projects through construction, commissioning, handover and close-out.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies, cost forecasting, risk and opportunity management, and reporting.
  • Experience with NEC, FIDIC, design-and-construct, framework contracts or similar.

What you’ll be doing

The Senior Project Manager is accountable for the safe, efficient and compliant delivery of major capital investment, construction and customer connections projects across the SP Manweb licence area. The postholder will manage projects throughout the delivery lifecycle, from development handover and mobilisation through construction, commissioning, operational handover and close-out. They will ensure that agreed outputs are delivered safely, on time, within approved budgets and to the required quality, regulatory and technical standards. The Senior Project Manager will ensure compliance with all applicable health, safety, environmental, construction and engineering requirements, including the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, ScottishPower Safety Rules, company policies and relevant licence and regulatory obligations.

What you’ll be doing The role is responsible for establishing and leading multidisciplinary project teams comprising design, engineering, operations, commercial, finance, quality, environmental, construction and commissioning resources. The postholder will provide clear direction, establish accountabilities and ensure that project risks, dependencies and interfaces are effectively managed. The Senior Project Manager will lead the commercial and contract management of appointed contractors and service partners. Contracting arrangements may include NEC3, NEC4, FIDIC, design and construct contracts, framework agreements and other forms of contract used by the business. The postholder will maintain effective project governance, including programme control, cost forecasting, risk and opportunity management, change control, reporting, assurance and escalation. They will identify and implement opportunities to improve capital efficiency whilst protecting safety, quality, operational performance and required project outputs. From time to time, the Senior Project Manager may act on behalf of the 132kV Project Unit Manager or another member of the SPM 132kV Networks management team. The postholder will also represent SP Energy Networks at internal governance forums, stakeholder meetings and relevant industry working groups. This is a key role within the SPM 132kV Networks team, offering responsibility for complex and strategically important infrastructure projects together with opportunities for continued professional and leadership development.

What you’ll bring

Accountable for the delivery, including construction and commissioning, of a portfolio of capital investment and customer connections projects typically averaging £15 million to £30 million per annum over the relevant price review period. Lead the safe and effective delivery of assigned projects, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, ScottishPower Safety Rules, company policies, technical standards and project-specific requirements. Confirm clear project scope, whilst establishing objectives, governance arrangements, delivery strategies, roles, responsibilities and decision‑making routes. Develop, maintain and control integrated project programmes and delivery plans, budgets, forecasts, risk registers, change controls and resource plans. Manage project expenditure, forecasts, commitments and change within the postholder’s delegated financial and contractual authority. Ensure that projects deliver their approved outputs, milestones and regulatory commitments whilst maximising capital efficiency and whole‑life value. Identify, assess, manage and elevate project risks, opportunities, issues and emerging threats, taking account of their potential impact on future delivery. Maintain accurate and timely project reporting, providing clear information on safety, programme, cost, risk, quality, outputs and key decisions. Manage project changes through the appropriate governance arrangements, ensuring that schedule, cost, risk, technical and regulatory implications are fully evaluated. Undertake project reviews and lessons‑learned activities, ensuring that agreed improvements are embedded in future projects and shared across the wider portfolio. Benchmark project delivery performance and champion proportionate improvements to project management methods, processes, systems and behaviours.

Minimum Criteria Degree in a relevant engineering, construction or project management discipline, or equivalent relevant experience. Significant experience of managing complex construction or infrastructure projects, preferably within electricity transmission, distribution or another regulated infrastructure environment. Demonstrable experience of leading projects through construction, commissioning, handover and close‑out. Strong knowledge of recognised project management methodologies and project control disciplines. Demonstrable experience of programme management, cost forecasting, change control, risk and opportunity management, and performance reporting. Experience of contract and commercial management, including the administration of NEC, FIDIC, design and construct, framework or comparable forms of contract. Knowledge of procurement processes, applicable procurement requirements and corporate governance arrangements. Detailed and demonstratable understanding of health, safety and environmental legislation applicable to construction projects, particularly the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. Experience of implementing quality assurance, inspection, testing and project assurance arrangements. Ability to lead multidisciplinary project teams and coordinate resources across organisational boundaries. Strong stakeholder management, negotiation, communication, influencing and conflict‑resolution skills. Ability to prepare clear and accurate reports, recommendations and presentations for senior governance forums. Ability to evaluate complex project information, make evidence‑based decisions and escalation matters appropriately. Proficiency in relevant project planning and reporting systems, such as Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project.
