Job summary

Tilbury Douglas is seeking a Senior Project Engineer – Mechanical to lead mechanical activities on major infrastructure projects in the UK, based in Sheffield. You will coordinate design through handover, manage procurement, and work across multidisciplinary teams to meet technical and commercial targets.

You will bring 5+ years in a mechanical project engineering role, strong MEICA knowledge, and proven experience delivering projects worth £2m+.

Qualifications

  • Experienced Mechanical Project Engineer with delivery of infrastructure or major construction projects from design through to handover.
  • Strong MEICA knowledge within water or similar process industries.
  • Experience managing mechanical subcontractors, procurement, and project coordination.
  • Knowledge of pumps, pipework, valves, process equipment, lifting systems and related plant.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proactive, solution-focused, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commercial awareness with understanding of project cost control.
  • Experience delivering projects valued at £2m+.
  • Minimum 5 years in the advertised role and CSCS card.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate mechanical engineering activities across the project lifecycle.
  • Manage technical submissions, procurement schedules, and drawing registers.
  • Review mechanical procurement packages and subcontractor submissions.
  • Coordinate integration of mechanical plant with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Support installation, commissioning, testing, and technical queries.
  • Monitor progress, productivity, and programme performance.
  • Assist with cost control, variations, and commercial reporting.
  • Support subcontractor management and project review meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with client, company procedures, health and safety, and quality standards.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, consultants, suppliers and stakeholders.
  • Support the Project Manager and deputise when required.
  • Undertake supply chain visits and assist with compliance audits.

Senior Project Engineer – Mechanical

Location: Sheffield

We are looking for an experienced and driven Senior Project Engineer – Mechanical to join our Infrastructure team and play a key role in the successful delivery of complex projects across the UK.

This is an exciting opportunity for a technically strong and commercially aware engineering professional who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about delivering excellence.

As Senior Project Engineer – Mechanical, you will lead and coordinate all mechanical engineering activities on major infrastructure projects, ensuring successful delivery against technical, commercial, programme, and client requirements.

What you will be doing

  • Coordinate all mechanical engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Manage technical submissions, procurement schedules, and drawing registers.
  • Review and technically assess mechanical procurement packages, equipment specifications, and subcontractor submissions.
  • Coordinate the integration of mechanical plant and equipment with multidisciplinary project teams, including civil, electrical, ICA, and process disciplines.
  • Support project delivery teams with installation, commissioning, testing, and technical queries.
  • Monitor project progress, productivity, and programme performance.
  • Assist with cost control, variations, valuations, and commercial reporting.
  • Support subcontractor management and project review meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with Client and company procedures, health & safety requirements, and quality standards.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, suppliers, and stakeholders.
  • Support the Project Manager and deputise when required.
  • Undertake supply chain visits and assist with compliance audits.

What we will need from you

You will be an experienced Mechanical Project Engineer with a proven track record of delivering infrastructure or major construction projects successfully from design through to handover.

You will also have:

  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical engineering and MEICA requirements within the Water industry or similar process industry .
  • Experience managing mechanical subcontractors, procurement, and project coordination.
  • Knowledge of pumps, pipework, valves, process treatment equipment, lifting systems, and associated mechanical plant.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • A proactive and solutions-focused approach.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-paced project environment.
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of project cost control.
  • Experience in a Mechanical Project Engineering role within construction, infrastructure, or process industries.
  • Experience delivering projects valued at £2m+.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in the advertised role
  • CSCS Card.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.
  • HNC/HND/Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Driving Licence
  • Ability to undertake the role within a Hybrid office based Team

Desirable

  • IOSH Managing/Directing Safely.
  • SMSTS.
  • Water sector infrastructure project experience (or similar process industry).
  • major infrastructure project experience.
  • Experience in value engineering and off-site manufacturing/prefabrication processes.
  • Experience as an Authorised Engineer (AE) or Authorised Person (AP) under a Tier 1 Contractor and/or Client procedures.
  • Knowledge of commissioning and handover processes for mechanical plant and systems.
  • Member of a chartered institute related to the Mechanical Engineering profession or similar
