Job description

This job is brought to you by Jobs/Redefined, the UK's leading over-50s age inclusive jobs board.

AI demand is outpacing today's computing and energy capacity. Meeting that demand is one of the great challenges of our time, and a trillion-dollar question. Flux believes the answer lies beyond silicon. Our OTPUs (optical accelerators) will offer breakthrough performance at a fraction of the energy cost, unlocking a path past the rapidly approaching physical limits of traditional chips.

This isn't incremental innovation - it's a paradigm shift.

The Role

We're looking for a Senior Process Integration Engineer to design and implement bespoke fabrication flows for advanced micro-optical and MEMS-based devices. You'll bridge the gap between R&D concepts and manufacturable reality, building, iterating, and qualifying custom process sequences that underpin our next-generation hardware.

This role combines hands‑on technical depth with strategic process integration oversight. You'll spend time both in the cleanroom developing new flows and outside it, collaborating with partner fabs, R&D institutes, and equipment suppliers to push process capability forward.

Responsibilities
  • Custom process flow development - architect, prototype, and refine fabrication flows across silicon, glass, or compound substrates for MEMS and optical structures.
  • Rapid prototyping & iteration - drive fast cycles from CAD to measured die, identifying and optimising key process levers.
  • Process definition & scale‑up - document mask sets, material stacks, and dependencies; mature experimental flows into repeatable, pilot‑ready documentation.
  • External collaboration - work directly with R&D partners, universities, and equipment manufacturers to qualify new process steps, tools, and materials.
  • Hands‑on execution - operate and troubleshoot core process tools (lithography, deposition, etch, bonding) during development and transfer phases.
  • Strategic oversight - guide internal technicians and external partners, ensuring process discipline, yield learning, and structured design feedback.
  • Data‑driven optimisation - use DOE/SPC and metrology data to accelerate convergence and maintain process control.
  • Knowledge capture & review - maintain detailed process documentation; run internal reviews and FMEA sessions.
Skills & Experience
  • 5-15 years of experience in MEMS or advanced micro‑fabrication, with deep process integration expertise.
  • Proven record creating or modifying complete process flows for novel MEMS or micro‑optical devices.
  • Strong background in at least three of: photolithography, DRIE/RIE, thin‑film deposition (PVD/ALD), wafer bonding, or wet etch.
  • Comfortable switching between hands‑on tool‑level work and high‑level process architecture and partner coordination.
  • Experienced collaborating with external fabs, R&D consortia, or tool vendors to develop or transfer new capabilities.
  • Proficient in DOE/SPC tools (JMP, Python, etc.) and disciplined process documentation.
  • B.Eng./M.Sc./Ph.D. in Materials Science, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Excellent communicator; thrives in fast‑moving, interdisciplinary environments.
  • Familiarity with wafer‑level packaging or flip‑chip integration for MEMS or optical devices.
  • Experience transferring R&D processes to external pilot or production environments.
  • Working knowledge of simulation and characterisation (FEM, profilometry, interferometry, L‑I‑V, or spectral testing).
Compensation & Benefits
  • £82,000 - £119,000 annual salary, depending on experience, skills, and location.
  • Competitive stock options, you're not just part of the journey, you will own a piece of it.
  • Work from our HQ in King's Cross, right in the middle of London's buzzing AI scene.
  • Live within 45 minutes of the office? Perfect. Live within 20 minutes? We'll add an extra location bonus to your salary.
  • We offer visa sponsorship and full relocation support (UK and abroad), through a dedicated third‑party provider who are on hand to make your move to London as seamless as possible.
  • Full BUPA healthcare and dental cover, medical history disregarded.
  • High‑spec tech for everyone - M4 Macs as standard, M4 Pros for Engineers.
  • Sony noise‑cancelling headphones and ergonomic setups to keep you comfortable and focused.
  • Personal company card to spend on tools that help you do your job - like ChatGPT Pro or anything else that boosts your workflow.
  • Healthy, chef‑cooked dinners in the office every night, with something for every diet and tastebud.
  • Monthly off‑site team socials.
  • 25 days of paid holiday, plus all the UK bank holidays.
  • Access to our in‑house 3D printer for personal or work projects.
  • Cycle2work scheme.
  • Need a caffeine fix? We've got you covered with a tab at our favourite local coffee shop.
  • We offer a pension plan and salary sacrifice options.
