Job summary

AECOM’s Water Team is seeking a Senior Process Engineer to design and deliver water and wastewater projects across the North and Midlands. You will lead process design, mentor junior staff, and support bids while collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams.

You will operate with a flexible hybrid working model across Leeds, Birmingham, Chesterfield and Manchester, helping to shape innovative solutions for major utilities and private clients.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in the design of water and wastewater engineering deliverables with multi-disciplinary knowledge.
• BEng or MEng in a related engineering field with experience in water and wastewater treatment.
• Chartered (or near Chartered) Member of a relevant Professional Institution.
• Proven experience at a senior engineer level in a consultancy within the water sector.
• Experience of managing projects, delegating tasks and mentoring staff.

Responsibilities

• Design and review process elements in wastewater and water projects, including site surveys and client liaison.
• Perform hydraulic assessments, mass/energy balances and pumping system analyses.
• Develop PFDs and P&IDs; prepare Hazardous Area Classifications and LoPA.
• Contribute to safety reviews such as HAZOP/HAZID and develop technical specifications and reports.
• Lead design stages from feasibility to construction and mentor junior staff.

Are you ready to shape the future of water infrastructure?

We are looking for a Senior Process Engineer to join our established and growing Water Team with opportunities to be based across our North and Midlands offices—Birmingham, Chesterfield, Leeds and Manchester—while also benefiting from our flexible hybrid working model.

Here’s what you’ll do:

Process Design

• Undertake the design and review of process elements in wastewater and water infrastructure/treatment projects, including:
  • Site visits to carry out site surveys and the support of liaisons with clients, contractors and suppliers
  • Hydraulic assessments and calculations
  • Existing process capacity assessments and basis of design development
  • Process equipment design
  • PFDs (Process Flow Diagrams)
  • P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams)
  • Mass/Energy balances, headloss calculations and pumping system analysis
  • Prepare documents such as Hazardous Area Classification and Layer of Protection Analysis (LoPA)
  • Participate in safety reviews, including HAZOP and HAZID assessments
  • Technical specifications and reports

Project Stages:

• Engage in all design stages, including Feasibility, Outline, Detail, and Construction Design, ensuring compliance with National and International Design Standards.
• Work closely with other discipline teams both locally and nationwide to deliver high‑quality technical solutions.
• Communicate effectively with clients and collaborators throughout the design and planning phases.
• Delegate tasks, direct and oversee the work of others and act as a technical mentor to more junior staff.

Bid Support:

• Assist in the preparation and management of bids and proposals, interfacing with clients to understand their needs and expectations.

Project Delivery:

• Ensure the delivery of quality designs within agreed budgets and timelines, supporting a range of AECOM’s clients, including Severn Trent Water, Yorkshire Water, Wessex Water, South West Water, Southern Water, Thames Water and Irish Water.
• Produce and review client deliverables, including calculations, drawings and technical reports to relevant standards and procedures.

AECOM’s digital strategy is driving the adoption of global digital solutions internally in our design process, to improve quality and consistency and streamline activities. You will help shape these digital offerings and use them on projects, including BIM, ProjectWise, intelligent P&ID’s and AECOM’s own tools developed in‑house, such as our pumping station generator.
