Job summary

A public sector recruitment agency is seeking a Senior/Principal Planning Officer in Esher to manage planning teams, evaluate applications, and advise on developments. Candidates should have significant experience in Development Management and excellent communication skills, along with a degree in planning or equivalent. A full driving license is required. This position offers a pay rate of £45 per hour, with a contract duration of 3+ months.

Location: High Street, Esher, KT10 9SD
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Duration: 3+ Months
Working Hours: Mon - Fri, 09:00 - 17:00, 37 Hours per week
Pay Rate: £45.00 Per Hour

Job Responsibilities
  • Help manage an area team in Development Management.
  • Evaluate and report on planning applications, enforcement, and appeals.
  • Advise on potential developments and all aspects of Development Management.
  • Examine applications before registration for validity and necessary publicity.
  • Process applications, including major ones, and make recommendations.
  • Handle appeals and present the Council's case at hearings and inquiries.
  • Investigate unauthorized activities when needed.
  • Attend meetings to assist in reporting and considering applications.
  • Support the Team Leader in supervising Planning Officers.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Perform other tasks as required for the role.
  • Sign planning decisions for certain applications if on Principal Scale Points.
Person Specifications
Must Have
  • Significant experience in Development Management, especially major applications.
  • Experience representing the Council at hearings or inquiries.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Understanding of Local Government procedures.
  • Experience with new information technology systems.
  • Ability to manage and motivate a professional team.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and Government guidance.
  • Commitment to excellent customer care.
  • Full driving license and own vehicle.
  • Willingness to attend evening meetings as needed.
  • Ability to handle work pressure.
Nice to Have
  • A degree in Town & Country Planning or equivalent and eligibility for Royal Town Planning Institute membership.
  • Previous experience in staff supervision.
