Job summary

A leading engineering firm in Glasgow is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to provide technical expertise in a high-hazard industrial environment. Responsibilities include managing electrical design documentation, producing technical reports, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. The successful candidate will have a background in HV and LV machinery and relevant qualifications such as HNC or an engineering degree. This position is a contract role on a major infrastructure program.

Can you describe your experience with the electrical design, installation, and maintenance of large industrial pumps, including how you ensured reliability under varying load conditions?

What approaches have you used to assess and mitigate electrical hazards associated with HV and LV machinery such as pumps and generators in a high‑risk industrial environment?

Opportunity

This is a contract position working on a major infrastructure programme. We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer with strong knowledge of industrial plant and machinery in both HV and LV environments. The role will involve working as part of a multi‑disciplinary engineering team, providing technical expertise and input across a range of electrical engineering projects in a high‑hazard industry.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Authoring, developing, assessing, maintaining and managing electrical design documentation
  • Managing design changes and concessions
  • Producing and developing Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) schedules, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case requirements
  • Producing and assessing technical reports and periodic safety reviews
  • Providing advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders
  • Reviewing technical reports and safety case submissions from external contractors
  • Checking and reviewing calculations and technical documents prepared by other engineers
  • Applying theoretical and practical engineering methods to design, develop, commission, operate, maintain and decommission electrical systems in high‑risk environments
  • Producing robust technical justifications to support electrical design modification
Qualifications & experience
  • Experienced Electrical Engineer with knowledge of industrial plant and machinery in HV and LV environments (e.g. pumps, generators, lightning protection, control systems)
  • Knowledge of current design standards and working practices including British & European Standards
  • Experience across concept design, detailed design and construction stages of electrical engineering projects (ideally including industrial and/or maritime)
  • Experience in design assessment of electrical plant and equipment to withstand hazards
  • Proven ability to author and produce robust technical justification and supporting documentation for electrical design modifications in high hazard industries
  • Experience working on multi‑discipline projects providing engineering input
  • Familiarity with safety case development techniques (e.g. HAZID/HAZOP studies)
  • Experience of working in the UK nuclear industry (energy or defence), particularly in the design and assessment of safety related structures, systems and components
  • Knowledge of UK and US nuclear industry regulation and practice, and application of relevant nuclear‑specific codes and standard

It’s great if you also have the following

Essential
  • Minimum HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Incorporated Engineer status or equivalent experience
  • For candidates without a nuclear background, a nuclear introductory course will be required within 6 months of joining
Desirable
  • Engineering degree
  • Chartered Engineer status
