Job summary

AtkinsRéalis in Sheffield seeks a Senior/Principal Engineer to lead wastewater network improvement and CSO reduction projects, collaborating with our Derby team across the UK.

Due to continued growth and framework success we are looking for a Senior or Principal Engineer to join our Networks & Drainage Solutions practice, based in Sheffield and working closely with our established Derby team.

This role offers a unique opportunity to become part of a highly regarded team delivering wastewater network improvement and Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) reduction projects across the UK. Whilst your day-to-day base will be Sheffield, you will work as an integral member of our Derby team, collaborating with experienced engineers, hydraulic modellers, GIS specialists and environmental professionals to develop innovative and sustainable solutions that improve network performance, enhance environmental outcomes and support regulatory compliance.

You will support the delivery of a diverse portfolio of wastewater and CSO projects, ranging from feasibility studies and optioneering through to detailed design and construction support. Projects will include network resilience improvements, spill reduction initiatives, storage and conveyance solutions, and integrated catchment approaches incorporating sustainable drainage, blue-green infrastructure and nature-based solutions where appropriate. The role sits within our Networks & Drainage Solutions team, with technical leadership and project delivery centred around our Derby office. Our team has built a strong reputation for delivering complex wastewater network, CSO improvement and integrated drainage projects for major infrastructure and regulated water-sector clients. Combining practical engineering expertise, digital innovation and multidisciplinary collaboration, we develop solutions that are technically robust, environmentally sustainable and deliverable. Your role

You'll take a leading role in the technical delivery of wastewater network improvement and CSO reduction projects, supporting clients from feasibility and optioneering through to delivery.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing technical leadership on wastewater network and CSO improvement projects from feasibility and concept development through to outline and detailed design.
• Leading or overseeing the production of technical reports, calculations, drawings and specifications, ensuring quality, consistency and technical excellence.
• Developing solutions to reduce CSO spills, improve network performance and enhance environmental outcomes.
• Acting as a technical point of contact for clients and stakeholders, supporting design decisions and contributing to successful project delivery.
• Working collaboratively with hydraulic modellers, surveyors, geotechnical engineers and other disciplines to develop integrated and buildable solutions.
• Supporting the identification and implementation of sustainable and nature-based interventions as part of wider catchment and wastewater solutions.
• Providing mentoring, technical oversight and support to less experienced engineers.
• Leveraging digital tools and data to improve design quality, efficiency and decision-making.
• Supporting project management, technical assurance, bid preparation and work-winning activities.

About you

We're looking for someone with a strong technical background and a passion for developing practical, innovative solutions to complex wastewater and environmental challenges.

Essential

• Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Chartered Engineer (ICE, CIWEM or equivalent) or working towards chartership.
• Strong experience in the design and delivery of wastewater network, CSO, drainage or related water-sector infrastructure projects.
• Sound knowledge of current UK standards, guidance and industry best practice.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary teams and contributing to technically complex projects.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• A proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.

Desirable

• Experience delivering projects within regulated water-sector frameworks.
• Knowledge of wastewater network performance, CSO spill reduction strategies and integrated catchment approaches.
• Knowledge of surface water management, SuDS strategy and design.
• Experience with tools such as InfoWorks ICM, MicroDrainage, InfoDrainage, Civil 3D and GIS platforms.
• Experience supporting or leading design teams and mentoring junior engineers.
• Commercial awareness and experience supporting bids and proposals.
