Job summary

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to join our Digital Unit in London. You will design, build, and maintain a scalable internal developer platform, implementing infrastructure as code with Terraform and managing Kubernetes clusters.

You’ll automate CI/CD via GitHub Actions and work with Azure data services to deliver reliable, scalable solutions. You’ll mentor junior colleagues in a global team, continuously improving platform automation and security practices while staying

Qualifications

  • We expect strong software development experience and proficiency in at least one coding language (C#, Go, Python) and one scripting language (Bash).
  • Experience building CI/CD automations and data services (ideally on Azure) is an asset.
  • Candidates should be a team player, an effective communicator, and proactive in improving platform automation.

Overview of the role

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to become a Senior Platform Engineer within our Digital Unit. The home office location is London, where you will join and become a key part of our global team and business.

Key responsibilities and duties include:
  • Design, build and maintain a scalable and reliable internal developer platform
  • Develop and manage infrastructure as code using Terraform
  • Implement and manage Kubernetes clusters for container orchestration

  • Work with the Product Manager to understand software developers needs and provide appropriate platform solutions
  • Ensure high availability and disaster recovery for platform services
  • Monitor and optimize platform performance and resource utilization
  • Implement security best practices and compliance measures
  • Document platform architecture, processes, and procedures
  • Stay updated with the latest industry trends and technologies in DevOps and platform engineering
  • Mentoring more junior members in the team in a global distributed team context
  • Further develop your skills across a modern technology stack and architecture

Candidate specification

We are seeking a dynamic and talented person with commercial experience and a passion for technology and innovation, who is ready to start taking steps towards leading a team. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate strong experiences as a software developer and proficiency with at least one coding language (C#, Go, Python) and one scripting language (Powershell, Bash). The candidate should have a genuine interest in building platform automations that makes our developer-customers lives easier.

The successful candidate must be a team player and effective communicator, confident in their capability, whilst able to recognise areas for development. They should have a natural ability in nurturing best practice and consciousness in everyone. They must also be able to think creatively and should always be seeking new and more efficient ways to improve the platform and the associated development processes.

The candidate needs to be experienced in software development and building CI/CD automations. Good experience with data services (ideally on Azure) is an asset. You'll commit to high quality code and be able to pay attention to detail.

Essential:
  • Language proficiency amongst C#, Go, Python - Proficiency with scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python)
  • Understanding of networking concepts and protocols
  • Knowledge of security best practices and tools
  • Proficiency with Terraform for infrastructure as code
  • Strong experience with Kubernetes for container orchestration
  • Proficiency with containerization technologies like DockerExperience with GitHub Actions
  • Solid understanding of cloud platforms (Ideally Azure but AWS, GCP accepted)
  • Experience with observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack)
  • Working with and designing RESTful APIs
  • MSSQL, PostgreSQL or other SQL databases
Desirable:
  • Working in Agile teams (preferably following Scrum)
  • Building Kubernetes Operators
  • Architecture of new or current applications (microservices, design patterns, reliability, scaling, automation)
